Turns out, as I haven't even set foot in town since level 8, I need about 100k to become current on armor and the 9 spells I missed(plus a few more for the next few levels). Now, I can do quests for Warp and Drain, but I'd really rather raise the money, instead of raising the fame. That, and I don't know where the quests are. So, what's the best bet for a blm who has about 10k starting capital if he sells all the half-stacks that he has, to get enough money for his spells. I hear mining, but have no idea where to go, or if I'm too low-level to survive there for long...
Edit: Keep in mind this is for top-end equipment, and the next 4 or 5 spells, so I don't have to come back for them later.

You need to pace yourself so that you don't have this problem. At level 20 the best thing you can do is farm for crafters or do repeatable quests. Lookup a list of quests for an area. There's some on here on the bar to the left. Get drain yourself, you'll do yourself a favor

Actually, as Discordian implies, it's probably quite worth taking some time to do some quests. You can raise quit a bit of cash this way, and the fame will in fact pay off later.
Otherwise, i do'nt know, looks like you're stuck w/ farming something or other. Maybe Dhamels, but i'm not sure if you can kill htem fast enough to make hte time worthwhile.

Then another question...where are the Quests for Warp and Drain, and how much fame is needed?

Check the Quests guide on the left hand side. Drain is in San d'Oria, Warp is in Bastok and Aspir is in Windurst. Hope that helps.

I got the warp quest w/ 16 easy bastok quests, no repeateables. That should be a loose guide, but just grab a list, you can get warp in an afternoon no problem.
Drain is a bit harder as you need access to the quest giver and that requires you to be working on mission 6 for windurst, i believe. Not sure on the fame req for that one.

You would need rank3 to get drain and about 30 quests done (with some repeats in there)... took me a while but it's a pretty cool spell!
To be honest I was unable to find a good way to make real money (50-100,000 gil/day) until I hit level 50 + but you might try mining the yughott grotto or palborough mines. Actually, if you can afford the field gear (you do not need the legs, just hands/feet/body help with mining - but the gear is essential) head to Palborough Mines on lightday and you should have a decent chance at getting a platinum ore (18-19,000 each) and other valuable ores. I am on your server and will be back on tonight... I just upgraded to the better tunica so if my old one hasnt sold I can give you a good deal on it if you send me a tell (they go from 15-20k but half that would be fine ;-).

Drain is an outstanding spell...you definitely want it. Take a hit, fire off a Drain, back to full HP...hopefully.
For your delima though, spend some time doing the quests. They're not for everyone, but they will make you some cash and most importantly fame. Some of the quest-only spells are just way too expensive. If you get them yourself, you save a ton of cash.
You also open up more and more quests, like being able to get the cool summons (way later on in the game) and the teleport scrolls.

If you can't do the Drain spell quest then you're gonna hate it when you hit my lvl. Having to quest in order to gain five more lvls. Get used to questing you're gonna be doing alot of it in order to do the most mundane things.

That's almost like saying that Stone isn't a must have spell. Or any of the other elemental spells. Drain is a spell that seems to improve over time and doesn't really have any damage limit. I don't have personal experience with it myself but for my BLM friend, Drain was doing 100+ at around levels 30+. That's around the same damage as most of the spells do normally at that level anyway. And getting MP back for using only a little MP is always a good thing since you can cast more spells with it. Sure you can survive without these spells. But you can also survive without any other spells too. You just won't be as effective without them.
Some more advantages:
Drain:
- Saves the WHM some MP from having to heal you because you were nuking too much for the tank to hold hate.
- Ignores most elemental defenses of an enemy since not many enemies (other then undead) are really resistant to it. So it's usually doing pretty good damage (as long as it's built up) for your level.
Aspir:
- Gives you MP to cast more spells (I believe the MP cost for this spell is pretty low too).
Saying these aren't must have spells is saying all BLM spells aren't needed. You can always use your weapon to melee (yea it'll be weak but at least you're doing damage right?) to get by.
