"Wow, that Corsair sure has bad luck!"

From the interview in Famitsu magazine...

(Ogawa Interview)
Q Will the Gambler's techniques be of a support nature as well?
A Yes and no. It's all a gamble so depending on the player's luck, you may have party mates saying, "Wow, that Corsair sure has bad luck!"

So, it seems that luck (or LUK, as in other FF games) could quite well be a new stat in ToAU. It's a very strong hint anyway... it's not like I had to speculate to death. Just thought I'd point this out. ^.^~

or maybe it's just a job trait, or just plain luck.

Q: Will gambling techniques also be party support-ish?
A: Some will. It's a gamble, so maybe people will be like "That Corsair has bad luck!" etc.

This is how it was translated on the interview thread... a bit less heavy on the hinting, but it still works.

maybe it will be that they either heal the party or do damage with their ability
that would be cool.

I can imagine that JA:

Corsair uses Heal-or-Hurt JA.

Best case scenerio - cures lots of hp, lots of praise from party
Worst case scenerio - does a ton of damage to party, corsair kicked from party

Would make leveling that job very risky, but I guess risks are what it's all about.

that's one spin on it! i meant like what if they made it LESS risky. like the party needs the Corsair for buffs mostly but they use a ja that cures the party or damages the enemy. that way nobody REALLY loses but the party doesn't get what they needed most.

Oops, my bad Artum, misunderstood.

Though the risk factor could make it more interesting. Oh well, we'll just have to wait and see what real info comes out... or continue speculating (which is more than likely to happen)

I don't think SE would make it either you do a lot of dmg TO your pt, or heal your pt for a lot of dmg. I think they'd have two different gambles, one healing the party one doing dmg to the monster. How much dmg healed/ dealt would where luck would come in.

What I would think would be more likely is Worst Case as being
- Heal the enemy for a ton of HP, Sorsair kicked from party
=P.
Tho if you healled the enemy for the same as you'd heal the tank now, it wouldn't be so bad since naturally enemy tend to have larger HP pools so the same amount of HP is not so valuible to them...

I think they'd make it so more often then not you'd get a lucky result but that when you do get an unlucky one, it's really freaking annoying ><.

What use do we have for a luck stat in FFXI? Item drop rates and critical chances are already covered by other things :dozingoff

I assume it will be a Treasure Hunter / Gil finder esque thing. You can get Luck + gear, but that doesn't make it a stat.

I also seriously doubt Corsair will do damage to the party, and if he does have the chance to hurt the party the payout on the monster will be equally. I see more of like the base effect of an ability is X (which is a very low number) followed by a random factor as a multiplier on X.

Example: Perhaps they will be given a defense down ability. .0005 is the base multiplier. A dice roll is done and makes up the multiplier. Defense removed is a percentage base and another dice roll is done for duration. So say a dice roll is 999 that would make the def down 49% (ouch) then the time multiplier could be something like .05, so let's say the next roll is a 265, the def down would last 13.25 seconds.

I think the job will work more like that and I believe that using guns to buff the party is something that just doesn't translate well. I seriously doubt party members will be shot. Maybe a hastega where they fire three shots in the air or something but I REALLY, REALLY doubt you will be shooting your members.

If anything, Corsair may be like the goblin's dice where depending on how well you roll, they can reset the entire party's TP to 0 or grant 100+ TP, give various buffs to party or enemy and perhaps even recharging all of our abilities including the 2 hours. :satisfied

I'm not sure, but then again SE never ceases to surprise me. Maybe it would only be for corsair abilities, maybe existing jobs will get new job abilities/traits using LUK... or this "hint" wasn't a hint at all. Oh well, I guess we'll see on April 18th.

Given my /random, lot, and drop luck throughout my FFXI career I can tell you that Corsair is definately not the job for me.

I think that's probably the best thing to look at for comparison at this point.

Really, I think you will have Corsairs negatively impact a party at times. We have cases where spells don't do full damage, or that cures get reduced (darksday), etc. That's not gambling. As a "gambler" class, there has to be a risk involved, not a varying level of success.

What about luck working on factors like crafting do instead of a stat ?
- Moon phases
- Day
- Weather
etc...

To make it funny, they could also link that to personal stats no one know (like, was the char created on eathday or fireday ?, full moon or not ?, etc...)

This way every Corsair could have their days of luck and bad luck ( unlike having all corsaires lucky on fireday), but everyone would have to find his lucky times by himself cause these times would be different for everyone
