a Corsair is a privateer, not a pirate.
The difference is that a corsair is sanctioned by the government to plunder the shipping of rival nations. In exchange for this they split the loot. They were skilled well trained professionals with good equipment. Quite unlike the popular image of a pirate (which is the outlaw variety).
Corsairs were professionals who could expect to make a fortune and then retire as wealthy men. Unlike outlaw pirates who usually ended up hanged or worse. Being a corsair ment you got all of the perks (plunder, adventure) and few of the drawbacks (scurvy, lice, being hung from the yardarm by the british navy)

Corsair is actually a derivation of the gambler job/class found in previous FFs. while its only official name mention in the main series is in FFX-2 (gambler/ lady luck NA ver) alot of FF characters have exhibited gambling traits, such as Setzer (VI), Cait Sith (VII), Selphie (VIII, her Slot limit break is somewhat of a gamble).
So Corsair is just a nicer name for Gambler. And they decided to tie in piratey elements to it too i guess.
Unless you were saying like dictionary meaning of Corsair.. which is basically what a pirate anyway, except they sound cooler

Prolly they decided to call it Corsair in order to avoid that every single stoopid american family with stoopid fake morals sue them 'cause Gambler is a bad with and you would be in hell forever if you gamble.. and shit like that..

From the SE site
Corsair
Descendants of the dauntless pirates that once scourged the seas of the Near East, corsairs rely on the “Hexagun,” a multi-barreled revolver, and elaborate luck-based abilities to alter the stakes of battle.

I keep trying to figure out if this job will be my main or just another one of the jobs I will hate. I personally dislike support jobs since I can't play em. The Revolver type gun sounds awesome but the gambling abilities seem like a huge draw back. The name also contradicts the abilities of the job which is what the thread is about. I just hope its not another SE fuck up.
