Looking at a pirate, I really don't see anything about it that would make me think it was a "support" role for a party, but putting this aside how does a "luck-based" ability work? This doesn't make sense to me, and sounds like something a 7-year-old would come up with.

Can someone explain "Luck-based" abilities?

It's like the Gambler type characters from past Final Fantasy games, like Setzer from FFVI. Various things like dice rolls and slot machines determining the effects of your actions (higher dice roll means more damage, triple 7s on the slot machine annihilates all enemies). As to HOW MUCH effect it will have for Corsairs, we have nothing but idle speculation at this point. And as far as being shot to be healed or buffed.... it's a video game. Stranger ideas have been widely accepted as enjoyable fact in the past.

stuff which have effects based on /random to a certain extent..
like two dice roll eg (from x-2), u could roll a 2 and a 3 and get 5 hits..
or roll 6 and 6 and get 24 (cos of pair). The same move can have 2 very drastically different outcomes.. basically..

I think Luck may become a hidden stat/job trait for corsair, to be increased by gear and AF, maybe?

I Believe that this job with "luck based" would be like the calculators on Final Fantasy Tactics for Playstation. Pretty much how Spira stated it.
So I believe Subbing Corsair with Black Mage or White Mage could Enhance Magic more, or it could make it Of no use at all.

Possibly it'll be a balance for the buffs they do. You could wind up with a really good buff, or lousy or even negative stats depending on chance. That's what seemed to be indicated in the interview.

Well for starters, it's not a pirate. SE were going to call it "Gambler", but it would have been too controversial in some areas of the world. And Square Enix came up with it so I think they'll work it better than a 7 year old. :dontgetit It's obviously going to make sense.
It's really useless to ask us how it will work, because we just don't know yet. Maybe you should go play FFVI or FFX-2 to get an idea about Final Fanasy gambling.

I really hope Luck won't be a stat but based on thing people can't control.
I won't bet on that anyways...
And about effects... I'd rather have a negative effect for the gambler only than something affecting the whole party.
For example, an accuracy buff could work well, work loosy, or not work and make the corsair loose something...
A job able to gimp the party really sounds like something I would never invite ( cause I would be unlucky enought to invite the unlucky guy :con )
However a job whose abilities are more or less effective sounds really good and fun (especially if the Corsair have something to loose, like items)
