La Theine is also a tough one for many, since I always hear La-theen on voice chat. The

"ei" does not exist in English and so cannot be pronouced by most Americans. It is pronounced like the "e" as in

"egg" but then sounding a bit longer.

There's an NPC in Windurst that even says "The rain in La Theine

falls mainly on the plain." That's sort of a good clue as to how to say it 8)

No problem tho, us

americans won't pop a vein over it.

I'm a

linguist, so I dig on pronunciations. Whenever I have a question, I go to the Japanese katakana pronunciation on

the JP FFXI website, in the Autotranslate section (click here

That said, I have a friend who pronounces things wrong habitually, and when he does

it, I want to strangle him. For example:

Jeuno: jay-OO-no
San d'Oria: san-DEE-oh-ree-ah (Sandy Oria)



Now... Jeuno is like Juno, Alaska, and San d'Oria is French, so the "d" doesn't get a whole DEE, like in

everyone's favorite nickname for the country, Sandy.

If you can read Katakana properly, it should help

never pronounce them correctly.
