Spoiler.
the Zilart are an ancient race. The Duke of Jeuno is Zilart. Pretty much they have a god complex and got betrayed eons ago, washed ashore, patched up by Maat, and started modern Jeuno.
they're still out to conquer the world, eliminate hume, mithra, taru, galka, elvaan and the like, and become gods of some sort. the short zilart kills the tall zilart for dominance.
you get to whoop him eventually. might need 18 ppl to do it. he has a nice little real estate accessible via Star Trek transporter beyond Ro Maeve. his floating city is commonly known by hi-lvls as "sky".
the crags were built by zilart, there's 4. one's destroyed and unteleportable. all linked to delkfutt tower, which provides juice. the zilart were "betrayed" by another race, whom have long turned to spirits (yeah, it sounds stupid).
shadowlord is a galka reincarnated. the galka was once a taleskeeper. in short: galkas go up to some mountain to die, and get reincarnated. every couple of years, a galka is reincarnated with the memory of the previous galka and that's how their history is maintained. galkas got their butt kicked by the Anticans in the desert island southwest of Gustaberg, that's why they live in Bastok. they also have delusions of grandeur.
that's a quick wrapup.

for some people getting there is the fun, not reaching the destination.

Here's the storyline of the original game. I've added my character's name to avoid confusion (The original was really confusing since you didn't know if it was talking about you or an NPC.)
A unified expedition from the three nations was sent to investigate the Zilart Ruins of Fe'Yin in Xarcabard, the three Bastokan members were the Galkan Talekeeper Rao'Grimm, and the Mithril Musketeers Cornelia and Volker.
Rao'Grimm had always been a little different from most people, this was mostly due to his role as the talekeeper, as he was privy to the memories of the entire Galkan race. His empathy towards Beastmen attracted the scorn of many of his Bastokan comrades, but nonetheless his powerful fighting skills eventually resulted in him becoming the first Galkan Mithril Musketeer. He began a romantic relationship with one of the few Humes who could understand him, fellow Mithril Musketeer Cornelia.
This enraged Volker, who was also in love with Cornelia, he was horrified to see a Galka and a Hume in love, but kept quiet about it, biding his time until the right moment. That Moment would come on this expedition, while he was scouting with Rao'Grimm he drew his sword and attacked him, Rao'Grimm was gravely wounded and Volker prepared to finish him of. Suddenly Cornelia jumped in front of Rao'Grimm and took the attack meant for him, ending up impaled on Volker sword.
Shocked Volker came to his senses and realized what he had done, leaving the dying Cornelia and wounded Rao'Grimm he returned to the rest of the expedition (consisting of a Mithra and Taru from windurst, and an Elvaan knight of San d'Oria) and said that they had been attacked by Beastmen, and Cornelia and Rao'Grimm had fallen down a crevasse.
The rest of the team bought the lie, and decided to return to their countries, rather then risk anymore causaulities.
Meanwhile Rao'Grimm tried to comfort the dying Cornelia, her final words to him "I couldn't let you die, you have so much left to accomplish" lingered in his head as he stumbled, through the icy wasteland of Xarcarbard. Suddenly it became clear to him, this act of hate was the same that the Beastmen were forced to deal with, he had been wrong all along, the Beastmen were not the true evil of Vana'diel, it was the free people, the citizens of Bastok, Windurst, Tavnazia, Jeuno, and San d'Oria who were the real menace. Guided by his emotions he slowly went into the ruins of Fe'Yin, and came into contact with the lingering energies there. These energies transformed his weakened Galkan body into that of a mighty Demon, the Shadow Lord had been born.
The Shadow Lord first made contact with the Demons of Xarcarbard, and dispatched them to the leaders of the Beastmen around Vana'diel. They told them that the time to rise up and strike had come, and the Beastmen, seeing the Shadow Lord as some sort of great god listened, and followed, rallying themselves into a mighty army against the free people of Vana'diel.
The Shadow Lord himself left the running of his armies to the Demons, and set about traveling to the capital cities of Vana'diel, brutally murdering all the members of the Fe'Yin expedition, including Volker. But even with this done, he would not be satisfied until all the free people were destroyed.
Meanwhile the Duke of Jeuno, Kum'Lanuat realized that alone the countries of Vana'diel could not last long against the Beastmen armies, he sent ambassadors to the leaders of the 4 countries and offered them a chance to join in alliance, which they readily accepted. The Alliance of the free people was born, united they struggled to drive back the enroaching beastmen forces.
Meanwhile the country of San d'Oria was busy designing a mighty magical weapon for use against the Beastmen, on its test run the weapon misfired, destroying a good part of the Tavnazian peninsula. Without aid from the mainland, the country of Tavnazia quickly fell to the Beastmen, and almost all of its citizens were killed. (Aldo, the leader of the Tenshodo in Jeuno, is a survivor of Tavnazia, and the opening FMV shows the destruction of Tavnazia).
The Republic of Bastok on the other hand, quickly showed its might on the battlefield, with its superior weapons, it was able to decimate Beastmen forces. Chief Bastokan Engineer Cid traveled to Jeuno and began work with the Jeunoan Government on the design of the machines known as Airships. Though creation of Airships came too late to play a part in the war itself, they became an important part of world trade afterwards, turning Cid into a Legendary figure.
Guard Captain Volker (the nephew of the Volker who had attacked Rao'Grimm) also became a Bastokan legend, leading an elite band of Bastokan soldiers to victory after victory.
Windurst on the other hand was not faring so well. The weakness of the Windurstian nation in physical combat was apparent, as their legions of Casters were quickly destroyed by the Beastmen soldiers, the armies of Windurst were forced to retreat into the city, and began to prepare their final stand. The Star Sybil, the leader of Windurst frantically sought for an answer. It came from the magical prodigy Karaha-Baruha, the so called "Mastermind of the Millenium". The Summoner spoke to the Star Sybil about his research, which had shown that a summoned creature of incredible power was living right under their noses, in the Full Moon Fountain located in the Horutoto ruins underneath Windurst.
As the Beastmen armies began to advance Karaha-Baruha descended into the ruins. The Beastmen easily penetrated the Taru's defenses and advanced into the city itself, towards the Great Star Tree in the Center of the city. When it appeared that all was lost a deafening howl suddenly split the night air.
Mystified the Beastmen turned to see a mighty wolf of enormous size rushing towards them, followed by the hero Karaha-Baruha. The creature (known as Fenrir) tossed the beastmen into the air, ignoring their attacks as if they were mere gnats. The Beastment army routed and fled away from the city of Windurst. Unfortunately the strain of summoning such a mighty creature was too much for Karaha-Baruha despite his power, and he died on the field of his victory.
Soon afterwards an envoy of Mithra from the island of Kazham arrived, their chieftess pledged her support in the defense of the nation of windurst.
Even with the help of the Mithra the nation of windurst had been crippled, her defenses had been destroyed, and the people realized that were the beastmen to attack again, there would not be another Great Hero to save them.
With Tavnazia destroyed and Windurst crippled things looked grim for the allied nations. A Young Galkan Dark Knight named Zeid decided to take things into his own hands, as part of a small group of Adventurers he led a sneak attack into Castle Zvahl, the stronghold of the Shadow Lord. The Shadow Lord, not expecting a fellow Galka to attack him, was taken by surprise and defeated by Zeid. Without their leader the Beastmen armies were soon scattered by the alliance forces.
Despite their victory the war had taken a great toll on all of Vana'diel. The three nations formed treaties with each other, and set about rebuilding their nations.
20 years later the War had begun to fade into peoples memories and the nations began to squabble with each other. It is to this world that Blade joined the country of Bastok as an Adventurer.
Blade quickly proved himself as a capable adventurer, and was soon assigned to more and more difficult Missions. One of these Missions was to be sent as an Emissary to the neighboring countries, while on this mission Blade ran into a creature known as the Seeker, who summoned forth a mighty demon dragon.
Despite Blade's defeat over the Dragon, the Seeker simply laughed and said that the Beastmens plans for resseructing the Shadow Lord were nearing completion. At the urging of the Adventurer Lion, Blade returned to his own country and told his leader of the news.
Soon Blade was dispatched to the Country of Jeuno, where the Duke of Jeuno Kum'Lanuat sent him on a mission to recover items of pure magical energy known as Magicite, saying that it was this item that the Beastmen were using to attempt the resseruction of the Shadow Lord. While gathering magicite Blade soon discovered that memories of the past were hidden inside the crystals, and slowly began to see traces of the events that had led to the creation of the Shadow Lord.
Upon finding the final magicite, Blade again ran into the Adventurer Lion, but before much could be said a fearsome entity emerged. This Shadow spoke to Lion and Blade saying that it was the Shadow Lord, and that all their efforts had been futile, as the time for his reincarnation was at hand. Blade returned to Jeuno, where Kum'Lanuat calmly said that even were the Shadow Lord to return, the seal placed in Fe'Yin at the end of the war would keep him sealed in the Northlands for all eternity, so long as the three keys given to each country were kept hidden.
Suddenly a messengar ran into the dukes room, saying that the leaders of the three kingdoms had been attacked, and that the seals of Fe'Yin had been stolen. Blade rushed to his home country, using the Airship pass granted to him/her by the Duke. Upon arrival Blade was assigned the mission of replacing the seal in Fe'Yin before anything could pass through it.
Rushing to Fe'Yin Blade came across a skeletal sorceror, preparing a ritual that would resseruct the Shadow Lord, Blade and his adventurer friends managed to destroy the sorceror and disrupt the ceremony, then procedded to replace the seal on Fe'Yin. Leaving the ancient city Blade again ran into Lion, accompanied by the Dark Knight Zeid. Congratulating him of preventing the return of the Shadow Lord, they said that they intended to stay in Xarcarbard and keep an eye on things.
On orders from Kum'Lanuat Blade was ordered back to Xarcarbard, to the ruins of Castle Zvahl. Rather then a desolate ruin, Castle Zvahl was a hive of activity, filled with Demonic soldiers. Fighting to the Throne Room Blade ran into Zeid, but was interrupted as the magicite inside the room began to glow, illuminating a giant stone coffin on the side of the room. Awakened, the Shadow Lord clambered out of his coffin, and regarded Zeid. Coldly he said that this time he would not underestimate Zeid, and summoned a binding spell to hold him in place. Now turning to Bladethe Shadow Lord began his attack, the battle was long and fierce, but Blade and his comrades managed to defeat the Shadow Lord.
Zeid, breaking free of his spell spoke the the Shadow Lord, using his true name, Rao'Grimm. With a sudden start Rao'Grimm came to his senses, he simply thanked Zeid for letting him come to himself, and said that now he could fade away into oblivion... the castle began to shake as Lion rushed into the room, shouting for everybody to leave, Zeid, Blade and Lion fled the Throne Room as Rao'Grimm was engulfed in a tremendous explosion.
Outside Castle Zvahl, Zeid thanked Blade for his help. While Lion invited him to come see her in Norg sometime, stating that there was need for strong adventurers there.

I don't have a story after rank 6, because it would be different for all nations, Windy, Sandy, and Bastok all have separate stories that would merge at some point after rank 6. I DO however have the story for the continuation of the story of Shadowlord...which will be covered in Zilart. This is why Lion had mentioned that you should visit her in Norg.
::::WARNING: STORYLINE SPOILER:::::::
**To keep in line with Blade's story, I'll use that same name to not confuse the readers**
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
After recovering from the battle with the Shadow Lord, Blade decided to pay Lion a visit into Norg. He traveled through the Jungles and at entering Norg, Lion greeted Blade with welcome. Lion then started to tell him of the situation at hand. Then suddenly Blade started to feel faint at the mention of the name Kum'Lanuat, then had gone into a flashback.
*flashback* After defeating the Shadow Lord...
Zeid, breaking free of his spell spoke the the Shadow Lord, using his true name, Rao'Grimm. With a sudden start Rao'Grimm came to his senses, he simply thanked Zeid for letting him come to himself, and said that now he could fade away into oblivion...
Then from behind a clapping came sounding through. It was that of Kum'Lanuat, and beside him was a younger boy. Kum'Lanuat starts pompously about how they should never have used the Galka to do the work, messing things up. Now that the Shadow Lord is defeated, this is their chance to call upon the Warriors. The boy listened with an arm held out to the air, saying that the "noise" is finally gone, and the crystals powers are strong again. Kum'Lanuat and his brother are of the Zilart race, an older race that was thought to have been vanquished ages ago. They were a race that had great power and were said to have powers of gods. Now Kum'Lanuat calling upon the powers of the crystal magicites for the Crystal Warriors to arise, to cleanse the world of its filth and rule over Vana'diel once more. A lengedary song sings of the Crystal Warriors that will wash away the bane that plagues the land of Vana'diel. The bane that Kum'Lanuat speaks of are the Hume, Mithra, Galka, Tarutaru, and Elvaan. The Crystals rose and from within a light came bursting through that five warriors of each race clad in dark armor appeared from them. The Crystal Warriors had risen.
Zeid, rushed to attack, but their powers were too strong to even approach them. Kum'Lanuat and his brother turned away and ordered the Warriors to finish them. It was at this point that Lion had rushed in yelling "You'd better get out of here if you want to live." The Tarutaru Crystal Warrior flew into the air and with his scythe weilded a thunderbold that came crashing down on Blade, knocking him out in one shot. Lion fought back with a blast of power keeping the Hume Warrior back. It was at this point that Rao'Grimm spoke. He said that he can still gather enough energy to hold them back, ordering Zeid and Lion to leave. At his bidding, Lion and Zeid drew back taking Blade with them, and escaped the Castle.
Rao'Grimm drew from within the hate and pain, and became the Shadow Lord once more, but this time, battling the Crystal Warriors. It was a lost battle. When the Shadow Lord began to fall, Cornelia appeared bathed in light with arms open as if to greet him. As he fell, a great burst of light came from within his body. "We finally meet again, Cornelia."
**/end flashback**
The blast that the Crystal Warrior Taru wielded must've knocked Blade out so hard that he couldn't remember the story. Now that Lion had refreshed his memory, the situation at hand is still a big concern to all. Lion introduced Blade his her father Gilgamesh which had suspicions about the Duke of Jeuno right from the start. That is why Lion had been snooping around for months showing up at all the questionable locations that the Duke had sent Blade. From here on, Gilgamesh warns of the great dangers that lies ahead for all adventurers and to all of Vana'diel. No one knows if it's true if the bane that song speaks of are the free people themselves, but he will not allow the Zilart to rule the free Vana'diel. It was then that Aldo rushed in informing all that Verena had been missing. Lion suspects the work of the Duke. All had decided that Aldo would return to find out more information.
Some time ago when Gilgamesh was a bustling pirate he came to a deserted temple in ruins in hopes of finding treasures. At entering he was met by a mysterious old woman who had asked if the great ones had risen. Gilgamesh was taken aback by her ghostly appearance and was confused with what she'd said. She then tells him to come back when the great ones had risen. Little did he know that the matters were this grave. He asks Blade to venture into the Jungles in search of the Temple of Uggalepih and find that old woman because surely he can find out more. But before he does, he should speak to the Chieftaness in Kazham for she holds the key to the Temple.
::::::::::::::
all this I've included are from Zilart Missions 1-3. But I thought they were an important part of the story. So please forgive me if I'd gone off topic, and sorry for spoiling it for you. When I saw the cutscenes to this, I was in absolute awe. The story was so touching and so shocking I was shaking. I'm positive for those of you who hadn't seen it, and have already been spoiled, you will still enjoy watching it. This gives me new hope for the game and gives me more incentive to continue. I will keep on going with Zilart and Windurst Missions.

::::::::::::::
all this I've included are from Zilart Missions 1-3.
