I am really confused as to what job you need to be to obtain the Avatars. Do you just need to complete the summoner quest to be able to get them? Or do you need to have your main job as summoner to get them? Or is making summoner your sub enough to get them? I have asked several people in game but have never recieved a straight answer. And if you do need summoner as your main, how are lvl 10 summoners ending up with all the avatars?

You can be a level 3 warrior and get the avatars, as long as you complete the quest, you'll have the choice to add the summon you defeated to your list of avatars.

I know this because my sidekick just got garuda as a level 40 whm with our highlevel japanese friends

Like he said you just need the quest. You get a very high level of fame in a town and you can open up the quest for an avatar. Then you can beat it with any job that you like, you get the scroll, read it as a summoner. Lookie there. New summon.

Keep in mind, not only do you need the tuning fork for whatever avatar you want, you also need to have finished the summoner ADV job quest if you want to obtain the avatar.

If you haven't done that, you can still go to the fight, but you need to choose an item or gil when you turn in the fork, as the avatar won't be offered.
