New jobs = New twists and turns to Ballista. Blue Mage is one of the most interesting Jobs one can ever face.
Like a Black Mage, we can nuke with good power.
Like a Red Mage, we can debuff and lock down our opponents.
and Like a Warrior, we can deal great damage and take a hit or two.

I ~~What is Ballista?~~
Ballista is a PvP Game in FFXI, over the years its been a fantastic pasttime for NA/JP/and EU players. The great thing about the game is that every one can add a flavor into the mix. WARs to MNKs to WHMs to BLMs to even a SMN.

II ~~What is a Blue Mage? How Limited is our power?~~
A Blue mage is a special type of mage that is said to be the real "Jack of all Trades". They gain power by Learning a certain Enemy Skill and turn it back to others in form of "Blue Magic", thus "Using thier essence and soul". a Blue Mage is extreamly powerful and they have great potential...However.
Our power is limited. We cannot use all of our spells but we only can set them using Blue Magic Points (This is similar to KH series using Ability Points for enhancing Sora™). While it does set Blue mages back a little, we can still use the right combonation of spells to last us.
Our Blue Magic Points are charted like this.

Level Blue Magic Points Maximum Set Spells
1-10 10 6
11-20 15 8
21-30 20 10
31-40 25 12
41-50 30 14
51-60 35 16
61-70 40 18
71-75 45 20

Level: There is a 10 level gap until you can use more points for spells.
Blue Magic Points: Every 10 levels give you 5 addtional points.
Max. Spells: The Max capacity of spells you can set onto your spell list.

IV ~~What spells should we use?~~

This Section is COMPLETELY up to your own instinct, you can do what you want to do, but this is a lsit of spells you shall need to survive.
30 Cap: Bludgeon(2 Pt) Head Butt(3 pt) Cocoon(1 pt) Sheep Song(2 pt) Feather Storm(3 pt) Blastbomb(2 pt) Healing Breeze(4 pt) and Battle Dance (3 pt)
20 points Max. 9/10 Spell slots.
Alternative: Metallic Body(1 pt) But its pathetic this level...dont use.

40 Cap: Bludgeon(2 pt) Head Butt(3 pt) Cocoon(1 pt) Blastbomb(2 pt) Healing Breeze(4 pt) Jet Stream (4 pt) Pinecone Bomb (2 pt) Mysterious Light(4 pt) and Feather Storm(3 pt)
25 Points Max. 9/12 Spell Slots
Additional JobTraits: Rapid Shot (It seems to make your Ranged Magic more effective Damage/Range wise)
Alternative: Mysterious Light(4) ---> Sheep Song(2) and Mandibular Bite(2 pt) Altho this is a better combo then M.Light.

50 Cap: Bludgeon(2 pt) Head Butt(3 pt) BlastBomb(2 pt) Metallic Body(1 pt) Cocoon(1 pt) Healing Breeze(4 pt) Mandibular Bite(2 pt) Jet Stream(4 pt) Sheepsong(2 pt) Magnetite Cloud(3 pt) Self-Destruct(3 pt) and Blood Saber(2 pt)
30 Points Max. 12/14 Spell Slots
Alternative: Sheep Song for Blastbomb but personally, Blast is alot effective and has a longer range

60 Cap: Bludgeon(2 pt) Head Butt(3 pt) Blastbomb(2 pt) Metallic Body(1 pt) Magic Fruit(3 pt) Magnetite Cloud(3 pt) Self-Destruct(3 pt) D.Death or D.Scissors(5 pt) Blood Saber(2 pt) Pinecone Bomb(2 pt) Sheep Song(2 pt) Mandibular Bite(2 pt) Jet Stream(4 pt) and Cocoon(1 pt)
35 Points Max. 14/16 Spell Slots.
Alternative: Pollen for Metallic Body for Resist Sleep
Or Pinecone/SheepSong for Radiant Breath, but its horrible for its MP/Cast time

No Cap: ==CLOSED== Iam still currently testing.

V ~~Why do we need these spells?~~

Bludgeon-3x, Kills Ichi Shadows
Metallic Body-VERY VERY VERY small StoneSkin
BlastBomb- AoE Bind, Small Damage, Great for Lock-Down
SheepSong- AoE Sleep I, Small Radius.
Head Butt- Stun, Decent Damage
Jet Stream- 12ft(in game) cast range, Kills Ichi Shadows and deals good damage
Healing Breeze- Curaga, Better then Curaga I Spell
Cocoon- DEF 50%, yes, IT DOES make a difference. a huge one as a matter of fact.
Pinecone Bomb-1x Hit Ranged Spell(surpricingly as far as a normal Black Mage spell) (about 20ft ingame). This is used mainly to lock down mages/pets/avatars
Blood Saber- When in a crowd and need HP, you can do Decent Damage and regain ALOT of HP (as 60 BLU, i drained about 70 HP each from 6 people, so 6 x 70 = a whopping 420HP...for a mere 20 MP) It does have a bad Radius range however.
Magnetite Cloud- This does really good damage and inflicts Gravity ailment of opponent(s), best used after Sheepsong/BlastBomb
Magic Fruit- Your CureIV spell, at 60 cap (Elvaan MND) i did about 315HP.
Self-Destruct- There is alot of potential. At full HP you can do Very Great Damage (around 500-600 per person) BEWARE: This will give you Weak-Status and makes the other team score Gate Breech. So do the following: Poison Potion yourself (or get Dia, any DoT spell) Tonko yourself, Run up to an Enemy and Blast away, When you cast, you should be at 0 HP, thus giving no GB, but alot of Damage)
Mandibular Bite/D.Death/D.Scissors-1x DD spells, cheap and VERY powerful.

Job Abilitys

Chain Affinity-This DOES make your Magic Spell 1/3 more powerful in damage, however it drains ALL of your TP, use wisely...

Azure Lore-It seems it Enhances Accuracy of Physical Spells and makes Addtional Effects of spells always kick in. Use to LockDown with BlastBomb/Sheep Song/Etc.

VI ~~Ah i see...What about Subs?~~
While i use /nin because we are a DD class, there are other options.

/whm Better MND for Magic Fruit and others, StoneSkin and -na spells

/blm Aspir/Drain/Ice Spikes/Stonega

/rdm Enspells...uh...No. Stick to blm/whm

/sam heres an interesting combo, at 60 you can Meditate and unleash hell.

VII ~~What Shall we use as our Weaponry?~~
Swords Obviously
30-Nadrs/Centurions Sword/Mithran Scimitar
40-C.C. Scimitar
50-C.C. Scimitar +1, Flame Blade
60-Greed Scimitar/W.W. Anelace/M.C. Falchion/Kilij
NoCap-Ifrits Blade/Martial Anelace/S.C. Gold Scimitar/Anelace

Weapon Skills
30-50: Fast Blade
60-75: VorpalBlade/Savage

VIII ~~Our Purpose in Ballista~~
We are a Damage Dealing Job, and we can Debuff and Heal, Always remember to heal your team mates and balance your MP aswell. Dont go blasting MP all at once place, and be sure to TP up when you get a chance...

IX ~~Armor~~
Simple. Get the Best DEF for Cocoon. and balence yourself with good MP equipments aswell. (Use Earrings/Rings/Ammo for MP)
Use STR equips aswell, a noted piece would be Chivalrous Chain, I will update this section later on.

Just a few things.

SheepSong- AoE Sleep I, Small Radius.


Lullaby*. You cant Sleep Undead, but you can Lullaby them. Its good for people with huge Dark resistance.

Magic Fruit- Your CureIV spell, at 60 cap (Elvaan MND) i did about 315HP.


Cure IV doesnt do it justice. Ive seen a SS of someone doing 800 with it, making it VERY powerful.

60-Greed Scimitar/W.W. Anelace/M.C. Falchion


Fixed. Dont give ANY Blu any idea about thinking about using that crappy ass weapon.

Weapon Skills
30-50: Fast Blade
60-75: VorpalBlade/Savage


Honestly, You shouldnt set a WS for a cap, because it would be better to be able to Self SC. Red Lotus > Sickle > 150 Gravitation would be better than 100 Fast blade.

(/rdm Enspells...uh...No. Stick to blm/whm )


What are you talking about, RDM sub is a decent sub for blu.
-You can skip metalic body and use blink and stoneskin.
-You can diaga.
-You can dispel.
-You got Bio (reduce enemy melee dmg or keep oponent RDM from trying to convert)
-You got gravity.

There is more to /rdm than just enspells. Deliver facts and skip the biased opinions.

I personally go for a VIT/Defence build, with stunning moves/bind/gravity/etc along with a few spike damage magics like Bludgeon, and ranged like feather storm or jet stream. Nothing like a THF SAing you for 60 damage. :dozingoff

I find sleep doesn't work as well, as it needs to be close range AND make sure they haven't got poison. Blastbomb is more effective imho, and stoneskin can be replaced with something that gives you a stat boost, as it is very weak indeed.

/rdm is decent, although, at the levels you get those spells at, you already get a BLU version of that anyway. Usually AoE to boot. Only benfit I can see is diaga, but you can always smack twice with your sword then Bludgeon to smite their shadows right off and in for the head butt, providing your /nin.

Just my opinion. Works for me. biggrin.gif
