Congratulation you have pretty much summed up every video game ever created.

Look, maybe this concept is foreign to you but there a little thing called time management. I go to college, go to work, hangout with friend and in my spare time play ff11/randome video games. Just because you played ff11 like a crack addicted whore dose not mean the rest of us are/were like that.

Moreover, as far as your whole ‘playing this game is a waste of time’ argument goes…well by that logic then anything done for enjoyment then is a waste of time I guess. Reading a book for nothing more then leisure is a waste of time because it does nothing to improve yourself or as you say put your ‘mark’ on the world (what the hell are we dogs?). Watching tv is a waste of time because your also seating on your ass doing nothing. Of course surfing massage broads like this is also a waste of time because you are getting nothing but useless pearls of wisdom by gems such as yourself.

Also shouldn’t you not be here by your own philosophy? I mean you say only things worth doing are things that will better humanity and shit. So why are you here and not learning 50 different languages or finding a cure for an exotic disease or something? Come on man! Chop, chop…get to it!

Watching TV or reading a book does not involves pretending you are somebody else, hidden inside a virtual world where you pretend you are having real life interaction.

you sound offended nerd, is ok lad, your virtual girlfriend will hear your complain.

Look... I know I don't post a lot but I do visit the forums almost daily. I have to say something right now. I have been playing off and on for around 3 years now and have just recently returned probably for what will be a long time. Why? Because it passes the time when I'm out of class or when all of my friends are busy or have classes; also, I enojy this game a hell of a lot. Now all I see nowadays is people challenging us with bullshit about "Why do we play this game?" For some reason these people feel dignified at the fact that they were "set free" from a video game. Yeah... I'm really happy that you were hopelessly addicted to a freakin' videogame and realized that there was a problem... just don't come waving your medal in my face, because I speak for most of us when I say that we most definately do not have a problem. Chill the hell out and go enjoy your real life... stop post garbage like this that just pisses us off.

* Ugh what am I doing this is exaclty what trolls live for >.>

On a side note, this made my day.

Well this is flame wars and all, but still...

Time flies no matter what you do, ragging on others for what they do is a waste of time too. You waste your time for posting crap, you waste our time for reading your crap. I'm wasting time typing this so who really cares what anyone does in thier spare time?

As for adults who play this game, we have to juggle relationships, work/career, a family, finances, advnaced education, staying in shape, that my angst filled freind is "real" real world stuff. We have our problems and we have to deal with them, that's it. An MMO is really just another form of entertainment, a hobby if you will just the same as reading a book or watching a movie.

And sitting at home makes us slobs? I can't speak for those who play this game too much, but there are alot of us that have our responsibilities. Need I mention we do have people who get paid to play videogames? They're called QA testers.

Oh, pardon me I just assumed being a casual-hardcore gamer is just another hobby.

so let me get this straight, you're here to tell us to stop wasting time, get out of our rooms and "live life" when you are sitting in you're room on your ass wasting your time on the computer... ya... like anyone is supposed to take you seriously?

What are you doing with your life that is so much better then me? I work 40 hours+ a week, spend a lot of time with friends, and yes, i do play ffxi too. but when i'm at home with nothing to do, its either watch tv or play a game. Just saying "i'm doing so much more with my life then you" doesnt say shit unless you say what you do that is so different then the rest of us.

here's a little something to think about. What happens to everyone eventually? as you said in your original post, we all are going to die. So in essance, in the game of life, the ultimate failure is death. So really, we all will fail at life. you, me, the guy next door, the people you know, the people you dont know... everyone. Doesnt matter what you do in your life cause you're just gonna die in the end. Unless you find a way to live forever, you're ultimatly gonna fail in the game of life.

I think you need to reanalyze your argument OP. All of what you're saying is nothing but blanket statements and crude generalizations about peoples' lives that couldn't be farther from the truth.

"most people started to play because of a real-life issue."

No. I started playing in July of 2004 because someone bought it to my attention that this game kicks ass. As a matter of fact, when FFXI first came out I said I'd never buy it because I don't see how the fuck you can make an RPG work in the online world.

"playing an MMO involves pretending you are someone else."

This couldn't be further from the truth; and what pissed me off the most into posting. If anything, MMOs reveal character to the fullest extent. Especially the people who steal items and accounts and shit. It shows that they'll do anything for what they want, even if it involves back-stabbing someone they forged a relationship with. Would they do it to someone in real-life that they know they'd never have to face again? Probably. They're fucking cowards.

You said English isn't your first language, and someone said you were from Mexico. I'm sure you've had your fair share of discrimination. How do you think we feel calling us all cowards hiding from real life? You don't know that. I could just as easily say that your friends and relatives jumped the border and are the reason that many lower-class Americans are out of work today, and are crowding the slums of cities with your pregnant teengaers. Do I know that? No. But I'm going to go ahead and make all these generalizations about who and what you are because of a few stupid ass extremist representations I've seen on T.V.

Anything is fuel here in Flame wars; we're all just losers masturbating on the intraweb to any lame-ass Flame Warrior.

I expect good things out of this thread, and I'll look in on it tomorrow. Night night, bitches.

I agree, the point is not letting it fly by playing this stupid thing.

Oh mr adults, why dont you for a change, this friday night actually have sex with your wife, the fact that you keep playing like a retard makes her swallow prozac with whiskey in the bathroom after masturbating due your lack of interest

Mixed feelings on this one, actually you whole post got a point, but certainly you cant compare typing or even using vent with someone you do not share real life with, certainly playing this game allows to the general fucktard to exploit his weak points and challenge them due the lack of real consequences.

kalajan :
Let me start by saying i did play FFXI for quite a while, i had "fun" but in the end i came up with the following resolution.

If you consider the facts plain and simple this game is simply a waste of time, in the time you all played this game in a way or another you could have been travelling, meeting new peeps, meeting chicks/men/w/e, maybe you could have been learing a new lenguaje, working or something but instead you choosed to be sitting your ass in front of a pc screen adquiering status in a virtual retarded "world".

This game is simply a distraction while we wait for death, belive it or not either you can think about it or not, we all gonna die, and in the end certain people (i proudly add myself to that group) want to leave a mark in the people they met, in the friends we had, in the things we did, by consuming your time in this game all you doing is being a parasite, i certainly agree everyone needs enterteinment and "fun" but the degree of achievement is way different inside a "virtual world". (maybe tahts why performers and actors are so overpaid)

how much you acomplish if you are sitting at home playing with a toon and emoting like a fucktard while regular people are outside living the life the way it is, in all i just wanna say that i belive someday you all gonna regret playing this game and if a few peeps realize i might have a point thats good, in the end i own you all cause you aint got the balls to go out, so keep your lard asses down and dont speak your ass just to justify your sad life. nuff said.

Although I think you could have written this a little better, attitude wise, I completely agree with you.

But:

- Everyone has the right to do whatever they want, .... god forbid not kill people or something, yet any action people perform will have a result

- IMO video games, including FFXI, is entertainment. I personally think people should find a better choice of entertainment but it is really up to them. Keep in mind certain activities are fun but it does not mean they are healthy. For instance, people can have fun at prostitution all their lifes but they will still probably die of Super AIDS, but we can't forget it's their own personal choice, like smoking or whatever.

- Just because people are old doesn't mean they are mature (If anything, please remember this)

(Shippou)
Guess what, not everyone likes to go party. That doesn't mean we're scared of going out to live life, it's just not our thing. I hate going to any parties or anything like that. I'd much rather be with a couple friends hanging out or even, God forbid, by myself.

I really think you can't use this as an excuse. Just cause people are sometimes anti-social doesn't mean they should go play a video game. Read a book.
If anyone thinks FFXI and the literature contained within is better than a book I feel sorry for you.

errr, what else....

I have played this game since NA release over a few servers. I quit about two months ago after realizing that I can do so much more with my life than memorize skillchains, time magic bursts, wait for pops, farm endlessly, and pay, on average, 180 dollars a year to do all this. I personally think it doesn't matter if you play for only one or two hours, you are still sitting in front of a moniter and not doing anything constructive with your life, unless you want to be pres. of SE or have in mind a gaming career or whatever, and if you do then that is cool, I hope it goes well.
Since I stopped playing I started my diet and so far have lost close to thirty pounds, I finally got back to learning to play the drums, I got into poetry and literary thoery, taking action to get into the military, and working so I can save up money to move to Long Beach with some friends. Now, anyone can think, "Oh, I can do all that and more and still play FFXI for a couple hours a day." I'm sure you can but that is not the point I'm trying to get across. I swear to god, learning the definition of a new word is more constructive than crafting a Haub+1.

I'm not trying to flame people, or target any specific player, I'm just stating my own opinion, and that is all you can really do in a forum. Bickering "Yes" and "No" is not going to get anybody anywhere.

I totally agree with Walrus on all of this. Maybe I should be doing something better with my time like reading or writing... maybe even *gasp* getting exercise (just kidding)! Really though, it's just another way to pass the little hours in between it all. Not every moment of our life can be incredibly life altering or impacting, though that would be kinda cool =P
