So today I was in Wal-Mart; specifically the Lay-a-way section. I was picking up an item I placed in their care a while back, and while they where getting my item I sat down and allowed others to continue through the line.

Eventually this heug black lady came up with a cart of two cans of Cream of Mushroom soup. Everyone else had similiar items; small items like shampoo, etc. They where paying on their lay-a-way items or taking them off lay-a-way, so I thought nothing of the contents of her small cart. Then... the unthinkable hit me. And god help me I burst out loud laughing and caught the angry gaze of the woman in the line trying to do so. She asked to place the cans of Cream of Mushroom on lay-a-way. When the clerk asked her to repeat that because she didn't hear her, she repeated "I want to place these two cans on lay-a-way". It was then that I couldn't breath very well from laughing. I suppose I was the most immature person there because everyone else held in their laughter and instead chose to contort their face while trying to hide it.

Eventually they got a few co-workers to try to reason(or to get them in on this hilarious outting; of which i'm not certain) with the woman that Cream of Mushroom can't be placed on Lay-a-way. One of the employees offered to pay for it himself for her as a favor, and she swung her purse at him and nearly took his head off. She then burst out with a "Don't you pity me little boy! Take your racism outta my face before I put your face into this counter." The white boy backed down, and I laughed out loud again. After some time passed by, the MOD(manager on duty) came to the back with a security guard and asked what the problem was. After speaking with her the woman threw her cans of Cream of Mushroom to the floor and stormed out of the store letting out every colorful word she knew. When the security guard and the woman where out of site the MOD, employees, a few customers, and myself enjoyed a nice LOL.

At first it was cute because we thought she was joking, but then as it became clear she was dead serious, it became sad. I don't know whether or not she was joking to try to get money out of Wal-Mart for racism(it clearly wasn't, members of her color engaged in the LOLing), or if she was a serious case of poverty. She looked pretty well-to-do in the clothing she had. She even looked a little too festively plump to be in poverty and recieving checks from the government. As we chatted a bit I left the store only to see the woman in cuffs next to the sliding doors, and chuckled a bit under my breath.

As I drove from the parking lot I went out of my way to toss two quarters out my window in her direction and honked my horn twice.

Am I racist? Am I cruel? Am I anything but normal?

I thought it was hilarious, but you guys will have had to have been there to laugh at it. It was just hilarious how dogged she was in her pursuit to place a pair of cans of Cream of Mushroom on lay-a-way.

Same here, Alphonze. They are removing all Lay-away by the end of this year. All items must be out of lay-away by December 8th, if i'm not mistaken.

Most civilized retail chains are getting rid of Layaway these days, which is good and bad.

My family used to put a LOT of stuff on layaway when I was growing up. It's not that my dad didn't make good money, but all that good money was going towards keeping their three kids in private school. :x

I think it was just a misunderstanding. The woman didn't know that you can't put food items on layaway.
Although I'd have to say her reaction (when confronted in a situation where she is obviously wrong) is consistent with that of most of the african-american women I've seen.
