Is there an unwritten geek code somewhere?

-.-

First let me start by saying I am a geek. I wear glasses, am unathletic and I play video games and magic:the gathering. With that established, I was spending the weekend with some of my geeky breatheren. Of course, the subject of movies came up. I had the audacity to say that I didn't think Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Space Balls were that funny ohmy.gif
They're ok, but they are quoted to death by nerds. They are NOT that funny. I then brought up a list of movies I felt were funnier, UHF, Napoleon Dyanmite, Airplane!, Blazing Saddles, Robin Hood Men in Tights, Office Space, Young Frankstein, etc.

Suddenly, I am cast off as some sort of geek pariah. I must have said something against the holy geek code, because I am obviously wrong to find other movies funnier than a couple of overrated, overquoted flicks. They were all over me like fat people at an all you can eat buffet.

Then I had the gall to state that I didn't think anime was very interesting either, come to think of it, I play D&D, but I don't really like that either (I just go to hang out with friends, I would prefer beer and poker).

So here's my rant: Why can't people fucking think for themselves? Why must I like all these things that aren't all that interesting? Why do nearly all geeks worship this crap? Is this some kind of blood bond or herd mentality? Same thing in politics really, but that's a whole other topic.

They took the "Not Funny" out of context and figured you meant the great workings of Monty Python were rubbish. It appears you said that the relentless re-quoting of the movie is not-funny (especially if they butcher them).

Nerds are only allowed to drink boxed-wine as well, from what I've witnessed.

I loved every movie you mentioned, am not the typical nerd (although I play FFXI), but the code you speak of is in every program written on every computer. Kind of a joke there =P

Ok let me rephrase. Monty Python and Space Balls are alright. Funny, but not hilarious. 6.5/10.

The endless quoting of these movies is fucking annoying and makes me want to curb stomp hippies.

there are alot of jokes in space balls that are not as funny unless you grew during the time period when space balls was released.

"She's gone from suck to blow!"

*ahem*

I would say it's part of the mob mentality, trying to fit in, not being the odd person out..so on and so forth.. it's like how the Vulcans and Romulans are of the same race, but diffrent mind set.. you were the Romulan in a group of Vulcans.. or perhaps the other way around if they actually started bitching you out for having an opinion against the general consensus.

MP & The Holy Grail: love it
Spaceballs: love it

all the other shows you listed: love those too, i'm actually open to other forms of entertainment.

This is me masturbating in the shower.
This is the highlight of my day.
It's all downhill from here.

That is my mantra at work.

It will most likly be derailed by Urafag..... Telling us how all these movies suck, and how he would like to stick a toy up his ass while watching anime related to paedophilia.

I play D&D for the same reasons you do, but also to fill my sociopathic needs :X. When my friends first introduced me to the game, I was a neutral neutral ranger, and opened the game joining a good guild. The first child NPC I saw, asked me for soup. I headshotted him, and his body was stapled to a wall.

So yeah, we got a laugh out of that. After I got smited out of fucking nowhere.

I could have made an anime rant too: that would get him in here so fast it isn't even funny...

Actually it kind of would be cause we would take bets on how long it would take him to type a novel on why I am wrong.

have not had the time to play the new sets all that much. But I was going to go to the pre release for the new set last weekend. Instead I decided to throw a house warming party smile.gif

People quote those movies to death in order to satirize the overquoting of those movies. Or at least I do, just like how I turn everything into a your mom joke no matter if it makes sense or not just to satirize the overuse.

On a sidenote: Airplane is one of the greatest movies ever made. I also enjoy the Naked Gun series.
