This was sent in a PM, but it was so long typed out I thought I'd share.
Well I'll have to say to you that PSU plays absolutely nothing like
FFXI. FFXI is a MMORPG, and Phantasy Star is a Action ORPG.
Basically if you already love the FFXI system then you probably
won't enjoy PSU as much.
If you haven't stopped reading yet I'll go into further details of
the differences between FFXI and PSU

;;
XP
In PSU exp is based solely on the type and level of the mob itself,
not the player. so a level 5 player could kill a mob and get 100xp,
and a level 50 could also kill the mob and get 100xp. Also, the
player has to physically hit the mob in order to gain exp, so if all
you did was healing or buff the party without hitting the monster
with a debuff spell, that player won't get any exp. Also if you die
during xping, you will not directly lose exp on your character, but
it will effect your mission rating.
Parties
In PSU it's possible to solo your way up to level 60 (current cap)
but exp parties do allow players to achieve exp and money slightly
faster. Parties of up to 6 can enter a mission instanced zone, and
whipe out all the mobs a lot faster than a solo player can, and
completition the mission itself yields about 50% of the exp/gold of
the mision anyway. So the speed in completing the mission over and
over again overides the potential loss in exp/gold of the players
lose by not soloing all the mobs in the area. Also with this method
of experience points, there is no cookie cutter party set up a team
of all melees or any combination can get the job done. Also it's
possible for a solo player or a team leader to call upon two NPC
friends, a story NPC, and a Partner Machine, to assist in a mission.
So no player is every really alone.
Totally true. I would highly advise ANYONE who is more of a FFXI vet to try this out before making the plunge. I found myself not liking the party mechanics of PSU because in FFXI we get used to being asked to join a PT in /tell instead so far I've recieved blind invites and some of the ones I've joined were just people randomly inviting people. Parties in this game are better for a small group of freinds and the occasional stranger that wants to help. Also for soloers you have to set a password and invite blocker otherwise you can have people jump in your PT without asking.
I do love the casual gamer friendliness this game offers, for soloing it can and will take a while to reach the cap but it's on your time. 360 owners wih Xbox Gold can try out the beta, once again I really stress FFXI vets try it out before making a decision. From what I played and tried out and weighing it's pros and cons I'm probably better off staying in VanaDiel and dealing with the problems it has... Phantasy Star fans however will probably enjoy this game.
