I'm Hispanic and I cant speak any Spanish. When someone asks me if I can speak Spanish I tell them "I'm Middle Eastern", and when someone asks me if I speak Arabic, I tell them "I'm Hispanic"

The reason I dont know how to speak Spanish, is because my Grandfather demanded that my Mother not teach me or speak to me in Spanish.

When I was young (late 70's) there was ALOT of racism, and my grandfather didnt want me to have an accent. He figured if I didnt have an accent, I would go through the racism he had gone through.

Even though I dont speak Spanish, I still look Hispanic or Middle Eastern, so I get double the racism. Actually triple the racism, because of morons like the OP that hate people like myself.

Anyway I have Mexican friends but I'm always shy about asking ethnicity because where I grew up in New York there were many migrant workers and they preferred to be called Hispanic and calling them Mexican (yes, they were from Mexico) was an insult to them. Then I moved to San Diego and here calling a Mexican Hispanic gets me the dirty looks because they want to be called Mexican. So I just keep my mouth shut.

Ok well, to start i'm not mexican, Puerto Rican. Those of you who say it's "not important to know how to speak spanish", that's just stupid. As long as Carlos, Juan, Claudia and Enrique are coming to this country every day for a better life, it is good to know spanish to be able to communicate with them. No, i don't agree with the OP saying that mexicans who don't speak spanish are "disgraces" because sometimes it's not their fault, you can't expect someone who was never tought spanish as a kid to suddenly know how to speak it just because they have brown skin. I speak spanish, but i was never tought it for the same reason as others have said, my parents wanted me to not be the target of racial jokes(didn't work, but it woulda been a lot worse if i had a really thick accent).

Basically, you can still "keep it real" without speaking spanish. Yes, i support latinos learning spanish and teaching it to the kids because i think it's important to know your culture, who you are, and where you come from.
