At low levels its hard to level up with dagger due to the crap damage, but possible. Sword is easier, but when you hit level 15 and get sneak attack, there will be a huge difference in damage, 'specially for a taru. So. Try to keep your dagger skill up and switch to it when you hit 15, but 'til then use swords.

I would recommend you learn both dagger and sword. Max one weapon skill and switch to other to max it. Switch forth and back.
Dagger is the best for thief, to my personal opinion, it's faster and have additional bonus like darkness, mp drain, etc... I think dagger is designed for thief. Thief are supposed to be agility so they should use dagger, leave the strongest attack to melee like Dark Knight and Dragoon. You only have to worry yourself with your position behind the enemy and unleash critical attack.
But I would still recommend you to learn BOTH dagger and sword. My other character is learning thief and I switch both of em to max both of skills.

HEY what about Hand to Hand weapons?! They work good to for a begining thief. I tried daggers in the beginning and found my self only fighting easy targets and doing 1 and 2 damage points when fighting tough monsters with a party. I have a another character that is a mithra lvl 12 using a sapara and I do like 17-19 damage on easy targets and then switch to HtH with windurst weapons from the conquest points. At first since I had no skill level I was doing 2 and 3 damage points, but once I hit level 21 I was doing like 10 points per hit, still haven't capped the skill for HtH either but combo is my most damaging Weapon Skill currently.

Yeah, I switch between sword, dagger, and HtH. I started out as monk so HtH is always blued, but it is my strongest melee usually. I level the dagger and sword abilities and keep those weapons on me so that I'm more flexible for skill chaining off of sneak attack. I just wish the better daggers/swords weren't so expensive.... I'm still using a Sapara and Aspir Knife at lvl 19 (;_;), but have Burning Cesti to back me up since i'm subbing monk for the time being!

Build up Sword and Dagger skills until you find daggers are working better for you on average if your sub is warrior or you have no sub job. If you have a Monk sub job however, use H2H or Sword or Dagger. H2H will work the best for the most part though. Once you feel comfortable using a dagger, you won't need any other weapon unless you put Ninja sub. Then you probably want a second weapon that increases stats or something like most THF/NIN has recommended.
PS: Leveling a Ninja from 1-10 is a pain in the ***.

h2h is best....combo is insanely good for such low lvl ws....not to mention it will help you get something out of all the 1h sword warrior noobs by creating a great lvl 2 fusion skillchain

Fusion is one of my favourite skillchains because it allows a White Mage as well as a Black Mage or Red Mage to Magic Burst to it.

I was in a half japanese group, half american(or atleast english speaking) in qufim and one of the japanese was a thief(monk sub more than likely was anon.). Well I didn't think about it at the time since I was getting exp like a madman I didn't care, but he was doing sneak attacks at around 100+ damage while my dagger was doing 50 or 70 average(lots of worms not enough memory). Not to mention his weapon skills made mine look like a nailgun. Anyways, I don't know where it caps at my level so it all depends on what weapon you feel comfortable with. Though daggers seem to made for thieves all weapon levels will be maxed out at some point in time(have to level a subjob sometime). Also a friend told me that some of the later dagger weapon skills(level 100 for example) do insane damage with sneak attack(not all WS stack with sneak attack) so I am just going to keep going with my dagger.

Yup. At 100 you get Viper Bite which is one of the best WS a Thief will get before Genkai. With Sneak + Trick + Viper Bite, the highest damage i've achieved is 427 with my normal STVs being 325-415. And i'm an Elvaan THF who's sub job is NOT at the max level.

15-33 id suggest h2h for sneaked combo fusion in renkei. unbelievably effective in vulkrum and qufim. from the thf in my pt, i saw him execute 170 on combo alone off his sneak and the fusion hit for 120. but definitely switch to daggers as a primary choice on the mid to later lvls since skill lvls greatly differentiate at mid lvls and on.
