Someone told me that if you trade the Bugard three different items quickly in a row, that it will give you the new years gift. I did a Water Crystal / Earth Crystal / Fire Crystal when the animal stopped, and got it on the first try. I don't know if it was just luck.. but thought I'd share anyway.. Good Luck all

if you think about it, I wouldn't be surprised if you get the NQ from a Wood.. because if it's a wood paddle and a wood bugard.. >.>
I'm just saying, I've yet to actually try this event. From Water[?] bugards an stuff, maybe you can get a water based item/etc..

when you use the gift like an item, it gives you synthesis support.

Now traded over 200 items, I tried the 3 different items in rapped fire theory. I had talked to the little boy before trading.... I even tried bugards in different zones. Did SE give it like 1% chance or something?
Edit: Just after I post he finally coughs up the goods.... I really want to ring someones neck over this event.

Or it could be that it's just random.
If you have RDM or BLM leveled high enough, you might want to try Xarcabard and kill elementals for items. Remember to smash the clusters. 'course, this depends on how crowded the other areas are. Lowbie areas might be easiest since those monsters are always dropping garbage.
Also, I had a friend discover that you can trade an Empress Band and keep it as well as 1 gil and keep it. I have no idea if this will net you the reward or not though.

You can also trade Imperial Bronze Coins, without actually losing them. I don't know if that will get you the item though. All I got were buffs.

I think it's "Happy New Year" in some other language, but I'm not 100% on that.

I traded a holy water, got new years gift first try. I'm pretty sure it was probably just luck, though.>_>

Two of my friends, Chibi and Umi we'll call them, formed a group. Now, I'd traded 50+ times with no luck, but Chibi got it on the FIRST TRY! Then Umi got it on the fifth or sixth try.
Amazing, no? Perhaps the chances of getting the New Year's Present is increased when you're in a party. I joined their party and got it on the sixteenth try or so (I know I traded a whole stack of yagudo feathers; part of the stack was traded, then my friend Umi gave me 5 Dhalmel Meat and after I traded all that, I traded a few more yagudo feathers to finish off the stack and got it on the last one in that stack! yes!).
My friend Chibi got it on the first try by trading a gold carp. My friend Umi got it on the fifth or sixth Dhalmel Meat. And I got it on the sixteenth try, which was actually not too long after 5 Dhalmel Meat were traded.
Something to consider. Good luck, everyone! And thanks for this guide, all of you who contributed. ^^

Helped my parents through event this evening. im not so sure on the party idea, my dad had to trade 200+ items and my mom about 70~ items. the second saying is Spanish for happy new year i believe. as Feliz navidad is roughly Happy Christmas or something of the sort. but then again i may be wrong as its been a good 10+ years since my last spanish class haha. and any news of HQ items being seen?

During my run with the event, I got my first gift on my 32nd trade, my 2nd gift on my 12th trade and while having my second gift in inventory traded two more times recieving my 3rd gift, however, it has a Rare seal and told me to come back after sorting my inventory. With the second gift I traded the NPC in sandy for the second time choosing to take what the boy has in his pocket and got 6 Kongou Inahos. I have not talked to the old man on the airship yet.

So it is just random how many items you have to trade? And what's the deal with items you can't trade, but still get buffs for?

Ugh. Went in a PT of two people last night, I personally traded something around one stack of crystals, 25 arrows, 20-some odd cookies, a grass thread stack, a cotton headgear, and nothing. I also noticed that if you trade muteppo you get the dialogue and a buff but it doesn't actually take it from your inventory. I didn't have the patience to keep chasing it around and seeing if it'd ever finally give me the real item, though. My PT partner also didn't get the item, traded at least a dozen cookies and 20-some odd arrows with no such luck.
What a pain in the neck... this makes the halloween event look like a piece of cake.
