Warcraft all fired upGrowing online fantasy world generates up to $120M monthly
By MATT SLAGLE, ASSOCIATED PRESS

DALLAS -- Each day, millions of people around the world gaze at their computer screens to explore a dangerous fantasy world of treasure-filled dungeons and flamebreathing dragons, a land where mortal enemies lurk around every corner.

It's the World of Warcraft, the most successful online game ever, and it's a world about to get a whole lot bigger with Tuesday's release of a US$39.99 enhancement called The Burning Crusade.

More than eight million registered users now pay up to $15 a month to gather with hundreds of other real people who masquerade as digital avatars in the never-ending fantasy world of Azeroth.

The Burning Crusade adds new locales such as Karazhan, Hellfire Citadel and Tempest Keep to Azeroth, and presents a spiralling war against demonic forces where the game's two opposing factions -- the Alliance and the Horde -- will face powerful new enemies.

Players will have access to the new realm of Outland that's nearly as large as the existing game world, and the highest level that characters can achieve has been raised from 60 to 70.

There are two new races to choose from as well: the remnants of an ancient spacefaring civilization called the Draenei, and the Blood Elves, who are addicted to arcane magic.

But in a market already overpopulated with dwarves, paladins and trolls, is there room for even more of the same? If fans are any indication, the answer is a definite yes.

[red]Trey Hancock, 26, has been shooting fireballs and frost novas to crush his mortal enemies in the video game World of Warcraft since it first launched in 2004. In his years of playing, the Houston resident led a guild of more than 200 people and raised four characters to the current top level of 60 -- including his main character, a mage named Oraj. [/red]

Like many others, Hancock said he took a break in anticipation of the expansion, where his first goal will be to take Oraj to level 70.

"I haven't played for the last week because I know once it comes out I'm going to be playing it nonstop," he said. It's just the sort of enthusiasm the company behind the game, Blizzard Entertainment Inc., is banking on.

"We were going to be happy if we got a million worldwide subscribers, we didn't feel like that was shooting the moon," said Rob Pardo, Blizzard's vice-president of game design and the lead designer for World of Warcraft. "The way it blew up is far beyond our wildest expectations. But now that we are at the mark we are, we feel there's still an ability to grow that customer base even further."

You know the world needs more interesting news when...this makes it as one of the top stories...but I mean wouldn't you feel cool if the one thing you were famous for was having 4 jobs @ lv.60 on WoW? :3

Just my opinion, discuss.

getting to 60 in FFXI is a feat in itself, let alone 75.

A feat? Sitting in front of a computer screen for days to level a online character to 75 (or 60) by pressing some buttons to "kill" monters is hardly a feat imo.

Now if you can make $100,000 while doing it, that's a feat...but it's wrong! Don't do that!

lol. This thread just makes me laugh even harder at something I saw on TV.

I was flipping through the channels, happened to stop on FX. FX was announcing that they were going to play the WoW: Burning Crusade trailer during a special-presentation of X-Men 3.

I still laugh about that, to this day.

When 8 million people use what ever ur writing , its could be soap or toilets for that matter, its all about sales, thats why ull never see a FFXI article.

Again 8 millions, its a sure sale.

If theres any question of which is better or why its top news

Currently, the population of Earth is estimated to be 6.7 billion people. As of this week, roughly 0.1 percent of the sum of modern humanity plays World of Warcraft.

And like Cartman would say: “Butters, go to the store. Buy World of Warcraft. Install it on your computer and join in the online sensation before we all murder you.”

wtf? Lineage beats FFXI in terms of subscribers? Lineage sucks... (imho).
Geek comment: Blood Elves thrive on dark/demonic magic... contrary to what this article states.
It makes since they would thrive off of dark magic because they are on the Horde side [aside from the story background].

There is some truth to this statement. I have only one job thats been my main for most
of the entire time [68BLM] i've been playing (3 yrs+ with other jobs on the side).
There aren't nearly as many players online on my server in my level range as there
used to be. BLM is not as favored now as it was before because of TP Burn parties.

WoW is a little more "casual MMOG'er" friendly. I generally only play 3-4 hrs a week at best because of school and try to maintain a balance between work/school/play in my life. I play both WoW and FFXI, and they both have their pros and cons. [I won't delve into that in this post.]

Imagine the combat of Final Fantasy Tactics, and an MMORPG had sex with a cartoon. Probaly pokemon.

It's like you controll your character and only your character in like a Tactics MMO

What level is your lock now? T5 warlock is amazing.
I tried rerolling on the new pvp est server, Auchindoun.. but that turned out to be a huge mistake. With there being roughly 3500 horde and only 500-700 alliance online at any given time, its retarded to try and quest. Alliance are leaving since they can't go 10 meters without getting ganked, makin the overall situation worse.

Gonna try rerolling on a different, somewhat older server.

It's only 62 atm. And I'd recommend a PvE server over PvP. Yeah PvP is fun, but imo it's a huge waste of time. There's still PvP on PvE servers, you're just not forced into it.

No no no, if your going for the World of Warcraft experience, find a server with about an equal amount of players both sides and go PvP.
