Hey all, ever since I started to play FFXI I have wanted to be a summoner smile.gif

I was wondering where I can find detailed info about the summoner quest.

Also, is there a specific job you have to be in order to get the summoner sub job.

well your first goal is to unlock summoner at LvL 30 but dont touch the job cause Carbuncle is a Royal POS. then work on getting your current job Blm to about lvl 55. Then get fame in all the cities with about 150 + quests and unlock all the "Trial by element" quests. After that hope you can find people for help killing the Avatars or help your friends LvL 55 or higher get their fame so you can go kill them one by one. A full party of LvL 60's with their two hours can take just about any avatar.

yeah also if you are a summoner you will want a white mage sub = blm sub will do...not much in a group setting. summoners are kind of versatile (if they did their job and got the avatars) but in groups they are usually taken as support and backup a whm sub will help your group whereas blm sub will give you...near-useless nukes.
and if you cant stand getting all the summons just get a group of magical JPs and get GARUDA and maybe TITAN OR SHIVA those summons are so freaking good

With the group debuffs, I hear summoners are just pretty much support, but if they play the cards right (drink JUICE, astral rings, have refresh on them), I see no reason why they can't play the way summoners were always meant to play. That is, sit back and let the avatar add to both the magic and physical damage pool. If I'm missing something terribly important, let me know. ^^;

No, that is how Summoner is supposed to be played. You are supposed to use your summons. Luckily Square is upping Avatar Strength and decreasing MP cost soon.

There is a huge misconception that subbing WHM makes you a good healer and since Summoner has a ton of MP they would be great at it. Any Red Mage that at least halfway keeps up with their spells will easily out heal a sub WHM (even with less MP).

I've seen Summoners actually use Avatars and do good amounts of damage and do some support without over using their MP pool (they use more MP then other mages, but they get it back faster). Summoner/White Mage is at best a back up healer when the White Mages, Red Mages, and/or Paladins run out of MP.

Well, from what I had heard, they severely underpowered the summons, but thanks for giving me more hope in my statements, that is how they were meant to be playd, and that's how I'll play mine.

Sorry to hurt feelings but there will almost never be a time where you can keep avatars out to do battle. Sure square is making them stronger soon but it still doesnt make up for the MP loss and cost of MP for there special moves. If you play summoner and wanna do damage you picked the wrong job : /. of course summoner was meant to do damage but thats not the way it has turned out. Ninja's where never meant to be tanks but thats what there getting invited for now. trust me i know, my Summoner is level 60 and all i do is buff and heal. and also Smn/blk is not a good combo if you want partys. Square would have to increase damage of avatars and lower MP drain rate, and make special attacks mp cost less in ordor for anyone to able to use a summoner as a damage dealer, and since there only makin avatars stronger it will still not make the mp you lose worth keeping the avatar out. im not trying to be negative are anything but if you wanna be a summoner you are gonna have to play a support role. :plain:plain:plain:plain:plain:plain:plain:plain oh and food will only help a little bit, but the food it cost to make your mp loss minimal is like 1000+ per food item. Regular juices dont do much

I just dont want people to be summoners and expect something that they cant do. not to rain on anyones parade. If square decides to raise avatar strength and lessin mp DRAIN AND COST expect a change then. then we can be compared to a black mage. but for now just a support job like a white mage and bard. oh and dont be fooled by the level 4 magics summoner gets at lvl 60 like GARUDA=aero 4, the damage these spells do is only equal to a black mages aero 2 , kinda pissed me off when i first got the abilitys

I know, i was joking. I'm comfortable with whatever role I have to play, and am looking forward to it either way.
