I bought Oblivian and I think i expected too much. The world is massive, and seemingly real and it looks really nice but the character models are so ugly and while the world is richly detailed everything else seems very generic. It is a GREAT game, I just wish the art direction was different. Iv been trading in console games but that remains on my shelf because im insistant on keeping it and finishing it but i guess i need to come to terms with the fact that FFXI for me is just a giant chat room, where I can choose to fight with friends or just sit around, and im not an RPG gamer.

I enjoyed Oblivion on my first play-through, but the more I played it, the more flawed I think the game is. It's fun to explore the world (the very best part of the game if you ask me), but most of the dungeons are horribly bland. The level-scaled enemies/loot completely remove any sense of danger from the world.
It gets really silly when you get higher levels, and simple bandits run around in uberexpensive armor that is supposed to be really rare.
And while the Elder Scrolls series have never been about choices/consequence through dialogue, I can't get over the fact that you get pushed through quests with no impact at all, no dialogue choices that make any difference whatsoever. For some reason this REALLY rubs me the wrong way in the Elder Scrolls series, even though I don't really have a problem with console japanese RPGs (which for the most part are ridiciously linear). I don't know if it's just an expectation that I have on computer RPGs or something.
It's like the game gives you an illusion of freedom, but the only freedom you have is to choose what quests you want to do in what order. These games could've been so much better in my opinion if they had more and better dialogue, and roleplaying choices as well.
It's silly that you can be head of the Mages Guild, Fighers Guild, Theives Guild and the Dark Brotherhood at the same time. And I might add, you can be come archmage of the Mages Guild even if you don't use a Mage character. XD That's just wtf.
Anyways, it's a well-made game, and I had fun with it the first play-through. But it could've been so much more and deeper!

all true. one thing i like about rpgs is when you get close to the end things that you to beat the stuffing out of you dont make a scratch. its the process of getting stronger. but i do like how powerlvling wont solve all of your problems and it remains challenging.
bugs me about the multiple guilds as well but i guess they wanted to make it accessible to casual players like myself who dont want to play multiple characters to see different stories. i'd rather wrap it up with one character i love rather than making 5.
