for those of you who dont know please read this post!
Square enix has announced, at the pre-E3 event in California earlier this year, that the FFXI team is working on a second MMORPG. Hiromichi Tanaka, head of the FFXI team, also announced earlier this year that SE planned to release another MMORPG which is targeted at the PS3 and PC (under the Microsoft Vista OS).
Claims were made that this would be a sequel to FFXI, which is untrue (see reference 1), SE quickly denies a FFXI sequel, and states that it will be a "completely new MMORPG." Though also stated in the July 18 press-release, "We will disclose further details of this title, including platform compatibility, immediately after any relevant decisions are made". This statement leads one to believe that this MMORPG is still in the concept stage, meaning that SE has literally just announced the start of the project, as of July 2006.
Although still in the planning stage, this Untitled MMORPG has not been confirmed as a Tactical Online RPG, as most rumor supports. This next-generation MMORPG is being confused with another SE release, in February 2006, in Japan only, Fantasy Earth: Ring of Dominion. The NA SE site does not have any information on this, and is only accessible through the Japanese PoL website. When translating the Japan version of the FE main page (reference #3, you need to translate it), notice that this game is compatible with the Playonline Viewer (japan only). I read the information stated, in poorly translated english, the basis of this game is as follows:
1. World is split into 5 countries
2. Create a character, just like in FFXI (characters look sort of like the character styles from more recent Star Ocean game)
3. Choose allegiance
4. Fight an enemy
5. Grow and build your char, just like FFXI
6. THIS IS A TACTICAL RPG/STRATAGY/MMO
As of Now, SE has not announced the US release date in schedual for Fantasy Earth: Ring of Dominion.
In light of this new evidence, we can conclude that the tactical MMORPG people are talking about is in fact valid, but at the same time, is an entirely different game from the next-gen, "FFXI sequel," PS3/PC game that people on FFXI have been raving about. In fact, since this Untitled MMORPG has little information available, it leads me to suspect we wont be seeing this PS3 MMO for quite some time (partially because the PS3 is not released yet.) The "FFXI sequel" is still in the planning stages and not yet determined what type, what setting, what story, etc.
NOTE: I USE THE TERM "FFXI SEQUEL" ONLY TO IDENTIFY THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE UNTITLED MMORPG AND FANTASY EARTH, SE IS NOT MAKING A SEQUEL TO FFXI. PLEASE NOTE THIS!
ALSO NOTE:
GAMES YOU SHOULD KEEP AN EYE ON!!
1. FFXII (FF12) Releases October 31 in the US. Reserve your copy now (i suggest ebgames, because they have the limited edition collectors box thing)
2. FFXIII (FF13) WILL be an absolutly amazing game, not only because of the PS3 release, this is part of what SE has been working on the passed few years, When we all thought they were inactive. note that FFXIII will be split into three (3) games, FFXIII, FFXIII versus, and FFXIII agito (mobile phone game xD). Expect FFXIII some time in 2007 after the PS3 release. (UNCONFIRMED guess!)
FFXIII and FFXIII versus directors are Motomu Toriyama (FFVII, FFX, FFX-2) and Tetsuya Nomura (FFV...VIII, FFX, Advent Children, Kingdom Hearts) respectivly.
3. SE is working on a number of games for the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP. Of which some of note are: FFIII (DS, Release date 11/14/06), FFVII Chrisis Core (PSP US release date is not determined JP is sometime early next year), and some other games.
