Hi everyone. I've been trying to determine the best way to raise my chocobo so she can be built for strength and endurance. However I also want to eventually work in teaching her the skill of "gallop" now that I've obtained the story to read to her.
She hit adulthood yesterday and I've been keeping her on a training program which has strictly involved her carrying packages, while feeding her 1 to 2 vomp carrots and Sharug Greens per day, as well as taking her for walks. Currently her stats are reading as:
Strength: Better than Average
Endurance: Better than Average
Discernment: Poor
Receptivity: Poor
Judging by the "Chocobo!!! Everything on How to Raise Chocobos with Discussion" post and ffxiclopedia, both seem to indicate that I must have Discernment to at least "a bit deficient" to "average" in order to have the best chance for it to learn the ability. (One place I read something to the effect an adult chocobo in "High Spirits" might also play a factor.)
So, my questions is, has anyone been able to teach their chocobo an ability without having to raise Discernment? And if not, can anyone recommend a way for me to modify my training regimen to work in some Discernment so she can have a chance to learn the skill?

It's easy really, but a bit more expensive. Just keep carrying packages for awhile, once both stats are at first class keep doing carry packages for about 5 more days or so to ensure they are both fully capped. After that set your careplan to basic care for the rest of its life. At this point you just wanna feed it greens, and keep doing long walks until you get the canter story from brutus (since it goes great with gallop)
Now you wanna take your bird and start doing races. It is very boring, and takes awhile, but every time you get 80 chocobucks put them into disc. It takes a little over an hour and roughly 25k to get 80 chocobucks, and takes about 4 training sessions to get from poor to substandard. So like i said before its time consuming and can get costly.
I would suggest if your serious about your chocobo to level disc to above average, then receptivity to substandard, but stop the intant you reach those levels because there is a stat cap on chocobos and it'll start to take away from your str and end if you push past first/first/above/substandard stats. I mean you could put more into receptivity instead, or one more stat level into disc and keep poor receptivity, but I think in the end its more well rounded this way.
Just make sure you have the chocobo you want, cause after your finished you may not want to raise another, unless your like me and just have to keep raising them. Also if you spend every waking moment racing your chocobo for chocobucks you would reach your caps in about 4 days or so, and you have a like 120+ days or something limit to raise one, so if your like me and dont spend every waking moment racing you will still hit the caps with time to spare. If I were you I'd be mostly worried about the gil.

thanks for the advice. I'll definately take a look into it. The problem I'm having right is is my strength has managed to get to impressive yet my endurance is stuck at better than average. I've been using the "carrying packages" in my care plan and I'm still feeding her vomp carrots. She's been getting slightly ill once in a while and recently, she's been getting spoiled off and on. (one day of being ill, one day of being hurt and one day of being spoiled since I first posted). I'm not sure if accidently working 1 day into delivering messages messed things up however its really irking me that she's stuck on better than average endurance....

Endurance is fairly useless in races compared to Discernment. DIS makes a big differences in chocobo racing as much as strength. Though, make sure you have END at average or higher if you're planning on doing chocobo racing.
For "non-racing" - Your chocobo lasts 17 minutes with poor Endurance. Technically, this shouldn't matter too much unless you're riding around the world, 17 minutes should be enough.
If you need more than 17 minutes, simply just use your chocobo whistle again.
Once your STR is maxed(probably around day 40), go for "Digging for treasure".
You have two options from here: Don't really care about keep END high and just wanting DIS up or getting DIS up while trying to keep END high(Though it'll take 10 days or so longer).
Don't care about keeping END first class:
Dig for treasure, and only that.
You should reach Average DIS and your END will go from first class to Impressive by day 50-55(I forgot the exact date my chocobo reached, but I know it was early-mid 50s).
At this point, you can just learn Canter and Gallop then go back to making Endurance full or just keep it the same or even trying to increase DIS to above average.
Getting DIS up while trying to keep END high:
-I'll have to check FFXIclopedia again, but the site for me seems down so I can't check right now.
Don't even bother with using Chocobucks to raise your chocobo's stats. Also, the amount of gil caps at 1k per race, so it shouldn't cost much at all.
Don't bother unless you ABSOLUTELY have nothing better to do than chocobo race.
It takes 5-6 "Stat boosts" to raise a chocobo one full level. Each chocobo race takes a little more than 5 minutes(timed), and you have to factor in the time of talking to the NPC and starting the chocobo race(40 seconds).
Lets say you get an average of 3 chocobucks per race,(2nd place), that means you get 80 chocobucks at 2 hours and a half.
You need to use the stat boost 5 times to get up the chocobo in rank, so it takes 12 and a half hours to get it up one stat approx.
Unless you're either using a bot or have absolutely nothing better to do, don't bother at all.
END isn't real important in chocobo races or even regularly chocobo riding(like I said earlier at the beginning of this post). END at average is fine for racing, and END at poor is even enough for regularly chocobo riding.

I have to comment since I use Chocobo bucks to raise my chocobo's.
Yes racing is a pain in the butt but it isn't that bad if it is planned for. I am lucky in that i have a previous retired bird that did well in the racing. In the 8 race cycle he would win 26 chocobobucks in Sandy. The cost of each race to the 1k cap is: 100, 150, 200, 300, 400, 600, 800, 1k. I currently race 4 races a day, taking approx 30mins and costing me 750 gil and on one day I will win 10 chocobucks and the next 16 with it repeating from there. I have planned to race from day 29-65 of my current chocobo and this will net me 478 chocobucks. On the last day I will race one more race giving me the full 481 for 6 training sessions. With the new update of allowing you to have more then 100 chocobucks these just build up until day 65 when my stats lock and I can put them where I need. This whole plan will cost me 27,400 gil not taking into account the 200 gil I earn from my bird from its care plan.
You do not have to race for a stat increase per day if you draw your racing out. Don't discount this tool for raising a chocobo. OP, if you have questions on this PM me if you want.

I've read the convo and noticed that there's a lot of talk/advice, but NO Chocobo STATISTICS. Personal bird or otherwise. I include whether or not 1 has won the Gysahl Medal for racing.
Please post so your Bird's stats, so they can be compared w/ advice. Black, 1st Class STR, Impressive END, Avg. DISC, Poor RECPT. Gallop & Canter
But what I wish to ask is this ..... Has anyone beaten the SuperBirds yet?
