As someone who compulsively reads guides before touching a job, I did read Banigaru's and Ifto's posts. Frankly, Ifto's post does a lot of nothing for me. It spits out gear as can be worn at X level, but it doesn't really approach what gear I ought to be wearing as, for instance, a level 50 Bard/Red Mage. Trying to sort through a long list of gear to see what the highest-level and, thus, generally most appropriate piece of armor and then the next best options, can be annoying at best.

Mind you, that's just how my internal logic works, which is why I've got my own gear sticky in the Monk forum arranged by level caps and, at 75, support jobs/roles. Other people's minds process differently, so maybe Ifto's post works well for them. Even so, though, people are always going to have questions. Personally, I'm still locked in an internal debate about whether or not to get Sha'ir Seraweels and their efficacy compared to my Choral Cannions (pretending that I won't be in a position to have Choral Cannions +1 in the near future, even though that's a possibility). There's always questions, even by the most researched and knowledgeable players. Given how quiet the Bard forum is, I wouldn't discourage it overmuch.

Well no doubt, Ifto's guide showed progression more so than "how to apply this situation." You're going to be 75, and maximize your Brd, like you were with Mnk, and likely tackle many of the stronger mobs, etc. For people who have that goal, and want to know how to approach gearing for those fights, that's what I wanted to make this guide.

So it sounds like you're basically saying yes, because while the other two guides serve a purpose, this one has its own merit......
so as soon as I can get Wikia to buy my idea, I'll get on it.

Seriously though, I'll gradually update, and people can fix my errors, or add their own fights that can have a considerable distinction in gear choice as they see fit.

I did read those guides. The main thing I would say with the gear one is that it's not kept completely up to date that I've seen. Things are missing. In fairness, this rings true for most stickys like that I've seen as most aren't updated every time items are added. However, I do think it's a good general format. The simple "you get this" format -does- "suggest" things as it focuses on things that actually boost the job. Things aren't simply mentioned because BRD can wear them, they're mentioned because they have some stat that's worthwhile.

An event-oriented FAQ might be best focused on what stats are most beneficial in a given event, with perhaps multiple examples of gearsets, or just key pieces of gear to consider. It seem to me that leaving things somewhat open would result in fewer arguments, and would future-proof the majority of the content. It'd be particularly pertinent for endgame type content given the varying ownership of Rare/Ex pieces and the like.

Alright test trial:

Fafnir/Nidhogg
Popular Subjob: Whm
Major goal: Elegy
Stat importance: Wind skill, Chr/Singing skill, String skill, -Enmity, MP(will be hard to prioritize, will be based on popular opinion)
Other objectives: [green]Heal[/green], Ltng. Threnody, Ballad, Minuet, March, Madrigal(if you think something has higher priority, or equal, or doesn't need to be prioritized, speak up)
Gear selection:
Weapon: Earth Staff, Light Staff(I figure it's a higher chance that someone knows to upgrade staff rather than someone remember the NQ version of Apollo's)
Relevant instruments: Horn +1, [blue]Piccolo +1[/blue]/[red]Sorrowful Harp[/red], Cornette +1, Faerie Piccolo, Traversiere +x(1 for the +2, 2 for the MP!)
Most significant attempt to prioritize will be in the gear rundown:
Head: Marduk's Tiara/Bard's Roundlet, Demon Helm+1, Walahra Turban, Opo-Opo Crown
Neck: [blue]Wind Torque[/blue]/[red]String Torque[/red], Star Necklace
Earrings: Musical Earring, [blue]Wind Earring[/blue]/Singing Earring, [red]String Earring[/red], [green]Astral Earring[/green]
Body: Errant Houppelande, Choral Justacourps+1, Sha'ir Manteel, Marduk's Jubbah, [green]Dalmatica[/green]
Hands: Choral Cuffs +1, Choral Cuffs, [blue]Bard's Cuffs[/blue], Marduk's Dastanas(if I had em I'd wear em)
Rings: Heavens Ring, Light Ring, Angel's Ring(should I just say Chr ring?), [green]Serket Ring[/green], [green]Astral Ring[/green](should I just say MP ring?)
Back: Jester's Cape +1(Does anybody want to make a case for any other back piece?)
Waist: Gleeman's Belt, Swift Belt(Unless I'm missing a belt, I'm pretty much pro Gleeman's for all non fast cast situations)
Legs: [blue]Choral Cannions +1[/blue], [blue]Marduk's Shalwar[/blue], Bard's Cannions, [green]Zenith Slacks[/green]
Feet: [green]Rostrum Pumps[/green], [green]Zenith Pumps[/green], [red]Marduk's Crackows[/red], [red]Bard's Slippers[/red]
------------------

Notes: I mark MP gear green, wind skill gear Blue, string skill gear Red. If you are bent on leaning in that direction, this IMO is the best gear that contains that bonus. I skipped RSE, like Elvaan's +15 MP earring, and +1million MP waist. I'm sure I made a mistake somewhere or missed gear; I've been inactive since August 17th. I am very top heavy with my main stat as far as what gear I consider best, so again, if the community can insist in a situation that one gear is better than the other, I will make adjustments accordingly. For now, if I say MP is most important, my gear sets choices will mostly have MP in them, etc.

That being said, critique at will.

I go by build instead of specific NM, unless I happen to need something different (/blm for eseal elegy, etc). 90% of the time I use a hybrid of MP and -casting time gear. I'm going to try and do this with "reasonably obtainable" gear.

MP build:
Extremely useful when in small groups. Most of what I did when I played often was hunt in a group of 2 or 3.

Head: Opo Crown, even though with zenith you can eat MP food, the HP boost from Crown will balance your -hp in other slots.
Body: Vermillion, Osode, or Sha'ir.
Hands: RSE, Zenith, or Sha'ir.
Rings: Astral x2, Tamas+Ether, Serket+Vivian.
Legs: AF2, Zenith, or RSE.
Feet: Rostrum, Zenith, or RSE
Back: Errant Cape or Intensifying Cape.
Waist: +MP RSE, it really sucks we cannot use Heirarch Belt.
Earrings: Loquatious and Astral.

I really MP whore up my bard, I split my merits 50/50 on HP and MP. With this setup I still have 1000+ hp and 550+ mp. The totals are a guess as I am doing this from memory :x my toon is a mitha. Theoretically you should be able to hit 600-800 mp and still have close to 950-1000 hp.

Fastcast build:
For when you need to pump out songs as fast as you can. I do this /whm but you can do it /rdm with Warlock's mantle for extra punch or /nin. I used fastcast build for pulling with /whm long before /nin became popular.

There's only a few key pieces you need:

Feet: Rostrum Pumps
Body: Sha'ir Manteel
Earring: Loquatious
Ring: Minstrel's (if you want to keep yellow hp)

Additionally you can use Warlock's mantle with /rdm. I used fastcast build for pulling with /whm long before /nin became popular. I generally hate /nin after getting caught, bound, and dying in Uleguerand. I can't live without erase. All other slots can be filled with a mix of skill, mp, or chr.

Skill build:
For when you want things to stick. I really find it's a case by case toss up between skill and CHR. I carry both with me.

Head: AF2 hat
Neck: Wind Torque
Earrings: Musical, Wind, String, and Singing.
Hands: Sha'ir or AF1+1
Legs: AF1+1

All other slots I fill with CHR gear for this build.

Body: Errant
Feet: Sha'ir
Rings: Angel x2
Back: Jester's +1
Waist: Gleeman's Belt

There's a magic number you hit after merits and other +skill gear where going over doesn't give you any boost to your buffs but might affect your debuffs. Unfortunately I can't remember the numbers right now, maybe someone else? smile.gif I prefer to max Wind and Singing skill and use Mary's Horn over Nursemaid's Harp for lullaby, I tend to use Musical+Wind earring combo over Musical+Singing.

----
It should be fairly simple to gear after collecting your gear to get ready for any event. If you take the time to weigh the benefits of a piece of gear to do multiple tasks you can take more builds with you.

I use the same builds for everything <.< >.>

Maybe one day I'll make an MP build, but I just never use what MP I have other than to cast Reraise every hour or so <.<; Oh, and for a quick teleport at the end xD

I understand completely.

But you don't play like every other Bard, and vice versa. The purpose of this is to try to come up with a general concensus on what you would bring to what event. And then in that case, people can judge their gear selection based on how they play FF, and what they do most.

That's what I'm after in this thread. Now granted, maybe we can just come up with a "MP Build, Chr Build, Skill+ build," in which case the purpose of this thread would basically be covered once we altered what Ghanima offered? Then the only thing after that would be to try to come up with a consensus on what build(s) would be best for which situations.

Personally i play my brd in 2 situations

TP Burn and HNM

TP Burn, im 95% of the time /nin and i put on mostly haste gear for recasts and also -phys dmg taken things like that

HNM wise there is absolutly no need for a MP build on brd imo, maybe because im a taru, but im already thinking about dropping some items that have MP on them to get other things that are splightly better. At HNM's my personal opionion is that you should almost always be:

Wind Skill>Singing Skill>Chr>Fast Cast>so many things>MP

IMO, Things like Musical Earring and AF+1 legs and gloves, AF2 hat never need to be switched out. Now the only exeption i have is things like PT buffs like ballad ill put haste gear in for im in tank PT and need to ballad2 tanks and then run to mages and give it to them. As well as Stoneskin i macro in full mnd build.

Besides thoughs 2 small equip changes, i dont see a need to every have a MP build on brd.

PS. With Mazruka the way it is now there isnt even a need for a -enmity build. And if you do need one.... get new tanks.

Hogie :

Duo UFOs/Charybdis/Ancient Goobbue/Cassie/Vivian/TT/Jeuno HNM before rage patch/etc. But if you don't do that or decide to pretend to be a healer while 3 or 4 manning sky triggers whatever works for you. That's the whole point of the situational gears. Though I find it interesting you state there is no reason to wear MP gear for HNM and then turn around and state BRD should never need MP gear. Maybe this is because your toon is taru and not something with less base MP such as galka or elvaan.

If wearing sha'ir hands/body and rostrum feet (optional to switch out AF2 head for walahra) you should be able to ballad 2 + march 2 the tanks and then run back and sing ballad 1 + ballad 2 without having to wait for recast timers.

Hogie :

Having +enmity merits from being a tank is a good reason to wear -enmity on your bard. More than just Mazurka spam can pull hate though unless on BRD/NIN and trying to tank you shouldn't have been singing Mazurka outside of running around to begin with.

I'd suggest people get an MP build simply for the fact that it doubles as an HP down set for Minstrel's Ring activation. Not the best thing for Fafhogg as you'll hardly be party-jumping as much, what with Blockaid and all, but for other situations it's very nice indeed to be finished casting and into another party sooner.

I'm going to try to explain this once more, and then ignore any more posts like it; it seems most people get the point already.

Bard A in Leviathan does not play the same as Bard B in Asura does not play the same as Bard C in Kujata does not play the same as Bard D back in Leviathan. Telling someone that they only need one setup...YOUR setup, is shortsighted, to say the least. If all we had to do was copy one player's gear, then we could all simply spam PM them for gear pictures.

Okay?

OT, clearly I will touch events where MP builds shine...if you want to follow the format and add an event, feel free. In the meantime, I'll update when I can. For now I figure this can stay endgame/HNM, but we might indulge capped events as time progresses.

Totally, if someone's playstyle makes use of an MP pool, then they should go for an MP build too^^; Btw- is there a reason nobody does a mix of skill+ and hp+ for buffing? I'm able to activate my minstrel's ring at almost full (base) HP like this as opposed to at 600-ish or so like most taru brd seem to do. Theres enough heavy HP+ avaliable to still have space for enough skill+ to cap nearly all songs...

---

On a side note, should we be thinking up melee build lists for kicks? xD omg evisceration build!

...

Ok, I'll be quiet now <.< >.>
