Ok, just recently I got convinced into chocobo racing to raise stats on my bird but I'm totally confused now. I want to do Free races as often as I can but told you gotta sign up for a novice race. My problem is that I have no clue how to even sign up for a novice race in the first place! I already signed up with Sandy and traded my racing card to the NPC. Whenever I speak to a jockey to sign up for a race though it says I don't meet the requirements. So where and what I have to do so I can start a novice race already?

Make sure you got enough chocobucks for the race. I believe it is 10 for novice races. Can earn chocobucks be doing free runs in sandy by the stables. NPC by the gate to to chocobo arena, left one. Talk to him(her?) and earn yourself 10 chocobucks. Then you can do races inside the arena.

On another note...fuck chocobo racing. impressive speed and discernment and above average end and average recept (gallop/canter)...and I have won once. ( I've placed 1st 3rd 3rd 4th 5th and 7th then gave up on it.

I think you mean the older npc races where you race against Staronion, Invincibleleg and Metorbrain. Those are the free runs you can win Chocobobucks on. To do those you need to race 3 novice races to unlock the free runs. Talk to the NPC to the left of the door leading to the circuit races like the poster above mentioned.

The Circuit races yes are for crap.

Hey I do good racing my retired bird on the Circuit...lol >.> Place 1st (mostly) or 2nd (rarely) every time, never a 3rd or lower placing. The only time I ever placed 3rd or lower was when I was experimenting with which item to use. Myself and my BF are getting quite good at picking winners and have netted ourselves a decent amount of gil both racing and betting ^^;

Item Used Every Race: Speed Apple. (I've tried/tested every item numerous times, this is the only item that will net me 1st or 2nd place every time. Granted there are no C1/C2 races yet so my findings are based on C3/C4 races only.)

i tried signing my chocobo to race at circuit matches and it says my chocobo is not eligle how come?
