My chocobo is

FIrst Class: Str
First Class: End
Substandard: Dis
Poor : Rec

Is it possible to learn any abilities at this age? or am I SOL? I've used chocolixer to spam stories but it just won't learn it.

Simple answer to you topic question: yes.

Now the hard part. Your disc needs to be raised to Average to learn the stories and even then sometimes it takes a few days of spamming to learn them depending on the story. Only way to raise your disc now is to do chocobo races for chocobucks. Good luck.

Thanks ladymist I was affraid I might have to go do chocobo racing. I had it dig for treasures still but the Dis is not going up anymore >.< I was too late reading the post about "raising first class chocobo with ability". by the time I got my Dis to substandard it said something my chocobo's growth have stablized or something. Grrrr. I wanted it to learn Gallop, oh well, I guess maybe my next bird...

Choco racing is a good idea...the free runs by the gates before the arena. Earn chocobucks and purchase the stat bonuses. Stat bonuses like those only work on a chocobo that is currently STILL IN your stables and being raised. Does NOT go to the one you have registered to race.

Example: Say I have a choco named Billy Bob. Just turned 29 days old, became an adult. Get a choco racing certificate thingie and trade it to the npc by the door to the arena to register to race...but do not retire Billy Bob.

Say Billy Bob has average in all stats. He is now registered with those same stats. You race and race and earn enough choco bucks to say purchase a speed attribute bonus. So you do. Lets say that bonus was enough to raise his speed to above average. Now Billy Bob in the stables is going to average in 3 stats still, and above average in speed.

BUT...the one you registered to race will still have all 4 stats at average...as if nothing happened. Of course this is easily remedied by getting another new certificate and re-registering him.

Pretty much the only way to max your choco is through proper training, food, and chocobuck bought stat bonuses. I have heard of ppl learning stories with a bit deficient discernment.

You can now use your chocobucks to raise stats on Retired birds, but it's 100 chocobucks, and yes your bird can learn abilities after day 70, but like it's been said, you need to have your Discernment at Average (which means yes you're going to have to race), my current bird is so damn stubborn she's at Impressive Discernment and still won't learn Burrow :wall
