Pre-gearing Scholar?

Hey guys. Ever since Scholar was announced I feel like I have a new reason to play FFXI. My question is, have any of you (or do any of you think it is 'worth it') to try to stock up on some equipment that ~might~ help Scholar in the long run? For instance, I've always felt I should have one, but all this week I've been camping Mysticmaker Profblix for the Moldavite earring. (Finally got the drop, 1/8 ; wink.gif Ive also been considering other equipment, whether I should go ahead and buy it, etc. The only problem is, deciding what scholar ~might~ or might not be able to use.

This being said, I know that SE will release new equipment sets, but it can't hurt to go ahead and camp these things before the "rush" right?

...Or am I just overracting? lol

nah, its a good strategy. I'm guessing anything that can be worn by whm/blm/smn/brd can be worn by Scholars, cloth armor. Vcloak hopefully. Errants/astrals are a must I would think. any MP/MND/INT+ gear, especially if its 'all jobs'

In exp scholar will most likely be a main healer. I would personally focus on that kind of gear first. Wands for pre-51 then elemental staves from there on. Its probably going to have a similar gear selection to BLM and WHM.

It'd be nice if Scholar got mycophile cuffs... I don't know why...Ive always wanted to use them XD My whm and smn were both past that level when they were released. But maybe I should go snag a pilgrim's wand here pretty soon...

My Lord. Why do we humor these sort of topics?

Bhoize moi. Why not just ask yourself, "Why bother to post on a KI job discussion forum, anyway?" Considering you had enough curiosity to click the link, something tells me that you have a subconscious desire to 'humor' this kind of topic. This is why they chose to release the Scholar and Dancer thread before we even know anything about them. This is why YOU chose to put a Scholar picture in your sig.

Incorrect, Johnny $Dollar.
I only clicked the link to pose the question I did.
I chose to put a scholar pic in my sig because *based off what I know of them*, i'd like to play one.

But that's the point what we know about Scholar or dancer is not enough for topics like what the subjob should be, worth after 37, endgame role or, last and certainly least, gear choices.

If you think it's a good idea to worry about gear before you know dick about a job, go talk to some blus who stocked up on mp gear or pups who camped or bought fumas or okotes because "lol pups kan punch liek munks".

Speculation is fun and all but seriously, these topics are worthless and SE is random as all hell. Go ahead and waste your time and gil camping or buying mage gear only to have SE *try to* turn scholar into the end-all-be-all DD. To answer your question, yes. You are overreacting.

When did I say scholar would be the "end-all-be-all DD?" Mmm never? Just speculating about gear isn't a bad thing.

And by the way,

I only clicked the link to pose the question I did.
I chose to put a scholar pic in my sig because *based off what I know of them*, i'd like to play one.

And this is why you've posted on numerous other Scholar threads? Yeaaaah... The same reason you put a pic in your sig could be compared to the same reason I wonder about gear.

So if you honestly think these threads are worthless, stop posting and replying to them and move along. Because yeah, based on your views, you're wasting time as well.

Already there, really. Leveled whm up to a sub level moreso for exploration purposes, since I hate buying powder/oils when expansions release cause the market for them goes insane. Kept pretty much all of my mage gear that actually had a value on them, if nothing else, a new mage job might cause those prices to go up some more by the time I'm done with them for the demand. Some items like the mold. earring or ugg. pendant, you might want to just go ahead and get. Unless your worried about being strapped for inventory space over time, cause you might decide to leve up one of the other mage jobs that are already in the game and there you have it, stocked and ready.

Nein. Show me where i've feed into rampant baseless speculation.

Speltz :
You don't ~have~ to do this stuff, but what would it hurt?

1. You and people like you camping that because you *might* need it could be dicking that poor blm/rdm/smn/whm who actually *does* need it.
2. People raise the price of crap based off this thinking to get rich off your ferver. And it works because you're willing to buy something at an increased price because you *might* need it. gg to that blm/rdm/smn/whm who now cant afford that.
3. Once you and those like yourself realize SE dropped the ball on gear selection, hello undercutting rush.

So like I said, *speculating* about what you might need is fun and all, but if you can't see why *acquiring* these things now is selfish or at the VERY LEAST stupid, then i've got nothing else to say. Do what you want.

That point is kinda moot. If the blm/rdm/smn/whm needs it. They will get it. If you end up not needing it. You wasted your own time.
Then can butt hurt all they like about someone camping something which it's questionable that they'll need, but last I checked, you can't call a GM on that, so they can go cut themselves or whatever the cool kids do these days.

If demand increases. Price will too. Good luck stopping that.

If Scholar ends up not needing it:

3. Once you and those like yourself realize SE dropped the ball on gear selection, hello undercutting rush.

I guess other mages wont be happy that the price goes down, will they? Maybe if they brought one before the crash, but they need it and you'll have just lost gil.

Crafters may get pissed off, but they're to blame for being idiots. If people still cannot see the price changes pre-expansion coming, they're just dumb really.
Anyway, crafters normally benifit from an expansion due to an influx of new gear they can over charge on.

Speltz isn't overacting at all, in fact he's going the safe route and trying to save gil.

He's asking what gear will Scholar most likely be able to use and thus obtain it before it becomes insanely expensive.

Judging by the nature of the job, I'd say Seer's would be a good set (if you don't already have it) as well as elemental staves. Obviously, most mages (esp SMNs) will already have these items, so lvling Scholar should be relatively cheap, only needing to buy scrolls (or however scholar obtains its spells) and some additional gear to update.

So unless this would be Speltz first mage job, he's prolly making a wise decision to go ahead and get some gear for scholar.

I don't think that the prices will rise that much. Usually what happens is items that were previously useless before something changes are the ones that raise signifigantly in price. Gun belts for instance were all but useless until COR was released because no other jobs sub RNG often. The original prices was like 10k and in a short period of time rose to 3mil. The same thing happened with the summoning torque. It was completely useless, and then the SMN update came, and the torque went from less than 10k to over 1mil. The prices for certain gear prices will definitely rise, however I do not think that it will be a substantial increase. I don't think a lot of people are going to take scholar to 75 anyways. I think the majority of players who unlock it will lvl it to 37 and then stop. You might want to get things like moldavite's earring or mycophile cuffs tho if you don't already have them.

Reminds me, for things like Moldavite's, you'll prolly want to start camping ASAP, since if scholar turns out to be able to nuke decently, it's gonna get overcamped fast

since when is camping something such as a moldy useless, or a waste of time? Even if scholar can't use it effectively, and I'd imagine it could, there are plenty of other jobs that can... My only job that can make ANY use of it is WHM, but I've been camping it lately. Even if I only macro it in for banish and holy.... It'll help @ least a little bit. if I lvl a job that makes good use of it later, all the better.

That's exactly the point that no one has addressed yet. I'll reiterate:
If you think it's a good idea to worry about gear before you know dick about a job, go talk to some blus who stocked up on mp gear or pups who camped or bought fumas or okotes because "lol pups kan punch liek munks".
...SE is random as all hell.

SE is not above dropping the ball on gear selection and we ALL know this. All i'm saying is speculate on what they might use, but it's dumb to actually go out and grab it. Something about not counting your chickens and all that...

Speltz :

Or! And i'm just throwing this out there...you can learn what are acceptable uses of typographical symbols.

Better yet! Why don't *you* learn to use the tilde *properly.* "Asshole".

Wow, lol. You actually looked up acceptable uses of typographical symbols to post on a forum. Just wow. lol. I wasn't even talking about using tilde properly. I was talking about using it because its ~my way~ of doing things. Just wow. Nice. Like what ya did there, also linked "properly" to tilde. Nice.

Oh yeah, while I'm at it, solo'd BCNM20 Wings of Fury last night on BST. Got an astral ring my first drop ^0^ Now lets hope I can make good use of it... if not, I can sell it. Like I said; what's the harm in that?
