Hello all,

I'm very exciter to say that I'm finally goin to start my journey on FFXI. I recently moved back into a city, opposed to the internet, computer lacking contryside i live at for the last few years. I'm not really sure where to start so i've been doin some research. I'm interested in the BST job and i am pretty sure this will be my choice of job. However, my inital choice of race was Galka. My firend told me that this was a bad idea. He stated that galka look ugly in armor and they don;t make good BST. My second choice is Hume.

I wanted to know if anyone could post some screen shot of Galkas and humes in armor, perferably BST armor. Also if anyone could tell me if race makes a difference and if so what race is the best i would greatly appreciate it.

Well, first off, consider that BST (at least at this time, might change after the patch today) tends to be seen as a solo job. In fairness, we're generally a weaker DD than most. Depending on the area though, we can be very powerful in other ways.
If your main goal is to be a DD in a party though, BST will not be the best choice as invites are perhaps the lowest of any job.

Any race can play BST (or any job really) in FFXI. You'll have difficulties in some areas, but advantages in others.

Pros: Galkas have the highest HP, VIT, and high STR as well. Generally speaking, Galkas take hits better, and can take more of them, than other races. As a BST, you -will- find yourself being smacked by one or more mobs at times, so this hardiness is a definite advantage. Statwise, Galkas are also well suited towards being melee DDs. That being said, BSTs (literally) have the melee stats of a BRD. Our pets are intended to make up for our deficiencies.

Cons: Galkas have the worst base MP in the game. BSTs tend to solo, and the most common subjob when doing that is White Mage. Ideally you won't get hit much, and so not need much MP...but it's one of those things where it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. The stat we use for Charm is Charisma. It's a stat that doesn't vary as much as others do, there are basically two levels: low (Mithra, Galka) and high (everyone else) with I think a 7ish point spread at 75. Not a huge deal as CHR is disgustingly easy to stack up on, and not needed in extreme amounts...but worth mentioning.


On the flip side, Humes are completely average, for better or worse.

I would look past how Galkas and Humes appear in AF armor or play BST specifically and consider what else you want to do.
If you forsee playing predominately melee/tank jobs, then Galka is a fine choice. If you think that your interest may shift to casting jobs as well, then picking Hume might be more prudent.

Different people like different races for whatever reason. One of my RL friends that plays loves Galkas and plays mage/casting jobs exclusively. Not like you can't get it to work if you want to.

Go with what you want. If you like Galka, be Galka. My initial choice was mithra - but after listening to someone else I ended up an elvaan. I wish I had stuck with what I originally wanted....

Everyone knows that half of this game is about looking slick.

Galka's don't look as cool in my opinion, thus is why I am Hume.

I also like being well rounded most of all, so in my opinion, I'd pick Hume. Tarus have too little HP, Galkas not enough MP. However, Mithras/Elvaan are balanced enough for my taste too. Pick whatever you want though.
