"To Know is to Act" - Gunther Schultz II
Welcome, my young student, to Gunther Schultz II's introduction to the Academy of Martial Theory. I, Gunther, lead our union of scholars all of whom have worked to espouse ourselves to the cause of the Alliance. Listen well and understand the mysteries of the Grimoire and the art of magic. Remember our motto: To Know is to Act!"
If your enemy is strong, weaken him with dark magic.
If your enemy is weak, attack him with elemental magic.
If your allies are strong, support them with enhancement magic.
If your allies claim victory, prepare them for the next battle with healing magic.
- From the Chapter "Military Expeditions," an addition by Adelheid Sturm

As their creed proclaims, scholars are ‘martial magicians’, unique mages who manipulate the forces of magic through the usage of their enchanted Grimoires and the powerful stratagems within. I welcome you to this exciting career opportunity and invite you to take part in our courses:

Overview
Martial theory is a field of study that is researched through the historical and practical application of battlefield tactics. Though uncommon these days, there was an age when martial theory was so highly regarded that any scholar was automatically considered to be a "military scholar." That age was the Crystal War.
It was plain to even a child's eyes that the early defeats suffered by the allied forces were due to the overwhelming numbers of the beastmen. However, the leaders of the allied nations were also taken aback by the unexpected sophistication of the beastmen's strategies--an entirely new approach was needed.
Military scholars were suddenly thrust onto the center stage of the war, with offers to become tacticians and operations staff flowing in from every allied army. Of particular note were the advocates of the Gunther Schultz School of Martial Theory, who led Bastok's forces to victory in the Second Battle of Konschtat. Their philosophy that action and knowledge were one and the same prepared them with the capability to respond immediately to any situation with which they were presented.
The job Scholar was released in the Wings of the Goddess expansion pack. You can activate the job by completing the following quest:
A Little Knowledge
Client: Erlene & Ulbrecht (Eldieme Necropolis, Batallia Downs)
Summary:
You have been given the chance
to study the grimoire used by the
famous Schultz School of Martial Theory.
Your first task is to bring Erlene
twelve sheets of vellum.
1) Travel to the past via one of the Cavernous Maws around Jueno
2) Make your way to the southern entrance of Eldieme Necropolis - S (J-8)- You can reach it from any of the past zones and be aware that enemies are the same level as their present counterparts barring a few exceptions. Sneak and Invisible are recommended to travel through the area at levels lower than 50.
3 Enter the crypt door and head straight down. The NPC Erlene will be there.
4) Speak with her and then trade 12 Vellums (They are under Leathercraft on the AH)
5) Speak with her again after using either of the following magic based two hour abilities:
Manafont, Chainspell, Azure Lore, or Astral Flow
6) Congratulations. You can now become a scholar!
Now that you have been accepted into the Schultz school of martial theory, below you will find a comprehensive guide to begin your career as a scholar. The Crystal War rages on around us and through your training here, we are confident that your skills will play an active role in guiding the forces of Altana to victory. Good luck!
Introduction to the Grimoire
An irreplaceable resource of the proponents of the Schultz School of Martial Theory, the military text known as the "grimoire" is a unique work. The original manuscript was penned on papyrus by the Windurstian Warlock Warlord Lungo-Nango. He professed unfamiliarity with magic, but after researching its strengths and weaknesses, he put forth a series of unconventional strategies that combined frontal magical assaults by heavy Caster Companies with flanking attacks by highly mobile beast units(*). He was a celebrated warlord with victories on many battlefields. However, after his death, the mages of Windurst narrowed their research to the study of pure magic, and Lungo-Nango's brilliant magical, martial tactics were all but forgotten.
Three hundred years later, the scattered pages of Lungo-Nango's works were collected and added to by Gunther Schultz, and thus a revised addition of the grimoire was born. The practice of copying and improving the tome eventually became an unbroken tradition among the pupils of the Schultz School of Martial Theory.

Scholars on the Battlefield: Maximizing Your Potential
1)Maximizing Scholar Black Magic
a) Load up on INT gear and later, elemental magic skill to enhance your elemental magic skills. Nuking is proving to be a very lucrative area for Scholars so it is advised that a Scholar be sure to keep his INT setups up to date. As your levels increase, look to add an elemental torque (+7 elemental skill) and Genie Gages (+7 elemental) to improve your magic accuracy rates, and then upgrade to equipment with high INT values (I.e The Errant set) and MAB (Moldavite Earring, Novio Earring, etc)
B ) Recommended Gear for Magic Attack
47 Moldavite Earring
51 NQ/HQ Elemental Staves
58 Scholar's Gown
69 Cobra Cloches
70 Vicious Mufflers
72 Errant/Mahatma Hopple.
Errant/Mahatma Slops
Errant/Mahatma Cuffs
Yigit Gimlek
Yigit Gages
Yigit Crackows
75 Golaird Cuffs
Novio Earring
2 ) Maximizing Scholar White Magic
a) Load up on MND gear to enhance your healing skills and your enfeebling skills. A Light Staff (NQ/HQ) is a must for curing and main healing.
B ) Recommended Gear for Healing/Enfeebling
51 NQ/HQ Light Staff
56 Scholar's Pants
72 Errant/Mahatma Hopple.
Errant/Mahatma Cuffs
Yigit Gimlek
Yigit Gages
75 Golaird Saio
Golaird Clogs
Golaird Chapeau
Loquacious Earring
3 ) Weather Manipulation 101
a) Each spell cast lasts for 3 minutes and has a 20 second recast time (less with Light Arts and AF boots). You can extend the ability to all party members by using the Ascension Strategem, but that does increase it's recast time by over a minute. It has been confirmed that one weather effect is enough to activate Weather latents on several items (i.e 12% Movement speed from Desert Boots).
4 ) Double Helices
a) When a helix is cast, a 'base' damage is first calculated and displayed. This damage is then deducted from an target's HP for several ticks (each tick occurs ~7-8 seconds). For example, if your Helix hits for 66 damage base, then every tic of DoT damage from the Helix will equal 66 for as long as it lasts. When these tics are added together, the attacks are quite powerful. Weather effects influences duration rather than pure damage.
B ) Modifiers: INT (1 INT = 1 point of damage), MAB gear, and Elemental Staves
c) Damage formula contributed by Rambus: "(INT difference of SCH and mob)*TIM+base]*MAB*percent bonus * other percent bonuses and divided by resist rates and such*
d) Modus Veritas ~doubles your Helix damage but decreases the duration significantly. Good to use when a Helix is on a mob that needs an emergency sleep.
