Hey, I'm a relatively new player, my rng is 55 and is my highest job. I read these forums a lot, and there's something I've been wondering. I see people using different gear sets for TP/slugwinder/barrage, and what I'm wondering is, what stats am I looking for in these gear sets? Is it just enough racc to hit consistently with whichever ability the set is for, and then ratk or str after that? Is str or ratk a higher priority for slug shot and sidewinder, and where does agi fit in for slug shot? When do I need to start worrying about different gear sets?

Thanks in advance for any help, and also thanks to Antithesis and Lambtor for the guide. It's been a great source of information for me. Also, thanks to Spider-Dan and others for adding information about guns/xbows in this thread and others. I'm using MG+1 now and loving it. Unfortunately, a lot of people in game seem to think ebow is THE BEST RANGER WEAPON EVER, even after I explain the math to them. I don't understand this irrational love of bows. dry.gif

First time I tried guards today as RNG for fun. Usually go on SAM but I farm on RNG and we dd it right after farming.

Is there a reason ranged acc was just crap? I must have missed about 85% on Suzaku easy. Was a bit better on Seiryu. Didn't do others today.

I was using Pot-Au-Feu and thought maybe next time try sushi? Or maybe that's the way it is now and I should use SAM?

how good were your mages with dispelling feather barrier? i haven't tried pot-a-feu with suzy yet but i was hoping it would be viable. i know even with full acc gear on i missed more than i liked with subs, sushi i hit more often but still missed some. that bird is fairly evasive.

It was dispelled pretty much all the time. I know it can pop between lv88-90 so maybe it popped high. I am going to try /NIN and dual weild acc+ weapons and see how that goes next time.

Talked to a relic gun owner and even he said he has a rough time hitting them and just goes with squid sushi, whatever acc+ he has and hopes for the best. Sometimes it's ok and sometimes it seems like you'll never hit.

I am glad to know it's not just me. I'll give it one more shot. Like I said /nin this time with acc+ weapons and squid sushi. I too was hoping Pot-Au-Feu would work because I like the dmg boost. Sushi seems very weak in comparason (well it really is I guess).

Updated the Guide

* Added new items introduced in previous updates
* Fixed as many typos as possible
* Renamed and changed minor issues / writings
* Added more links

I do realize that the guide is a little skewed towards Bows but hopefully most people will notice this was written a while back. I will try to update it more often.

From what I have seen, barrage can miss entirely, and it actually does a fair amount of the time at Lv 30. The reason for this is that damage for each shot is only figured out if the shot before it has landed. If you miss the first shot of barrage, that's it; all shots miss. If you hit the 1st, and miss the 2nd, the 3rd and 4th miss, etc. Again, you won't see any of this show up on the battle log; it's all done when calculating your total JA damage. You also won't see any special animation on your screen (like firing your bow 3 or 4 times very quickly). You’ll only see a regular ranged attack animation, but there will be a sound to let you know it was used.


that sound is the same as a crt hit a believe. or makes that sound if one of the arrows in it crt, been a while s/igh

There's a sound when barrage lands that differs from the sound of a normal ranged attack? I only knew about the sound when you used the job ability.

In case anyone's wondering, updates I suggest for this guide will only come after several paths have been attempted for progression within the job after the level caps are raised. Of course, several things will need to be addressed and considered, and they will be.
