I wonder what is going on with story line, 12 and 13 are really loosing it. I think it may be due to graphics > story line effort.

you could say it started to loose it with FF X and X-2 but uh.. maybe ill finish x-2 and see what i think of that kind of style better. I got stuck somewhere and gave up playing. I remember a friend telling me she liked it and liked the beastmaster outfit lol.

What the heck. The storyline is just as good (and by good I mean bad) as in FF4-10, and much better than 12.

Saying that FF has once had a good story really makes me confused. 13 ain't a step back, but it doesn't do it any better either.

I am so disappointed right now, it's not even funny. This game is... horrible. Maybe they really do need to end the series, or fire everyone they have working for them. They have lost everything that we used to see in the classic FF games. The mutation that they have come up with makes me sad. I can't recommend this game to anyone.

It's really because Yoshinori Kitase wants to be a fucking film maker rather than a game designer.

True that. I feel like I'm not even playing the game anymore. It's playing itself, then I hit a cutscene.

I love the game.

Feels great not playing a sandbox game like I have been the last 50 games, like I feel like playing another scavenger hunt game.

worst FF game I have ever played. Even worse then X-2. What the fuck were they thinking?! To make the most linear RPG ever?

I gotta say it is "Diffirent" sorta like x-2 had sex with 10 which had sex with kingdom hearts in some sort of freaky deaky 3 way mish mash but other than that all i have against it is the single character control and the fact the game is a magnet to reviewers who think JRPGs are the same as Sandbox RPGs, but the whole "omgawd no towns" thing is proof people are fucking retarded when it comes to common sense. On the run = Keep away from towns huurr durr but hey this is just my way of thinking. Visually Astounding in terms of standards but id give it a 8/10 still better than FF12 in my line up.

EDIT: Found a review that doesnt make me want to stab a baby Kotaku FF13

its been getting progressively more addicting, but the beginning was bad... too bad the story just never seems to really pick up... :/

oh well, still better than 12, or X2, and thats all that matters to me.

Kitase wants to do FFXIII-2

Quote

The French apparently love Final Fantasy. This Tuesday, there where hundreds of people waiting in line at an electronics store at the famous Champs Elyssee, hoping to be one of the few to walk away with a signed copy of part XIII. A few hours before the game went on sale, I spoke to producer Kitase and director Toriyama about battle systems, western RPGs and the possibility of a Final Fantasy XIII-2.

After some slight confusion (“We thought you worked for Dutch TV?” “Nope, I write about games.”) and a very long wait, it is my turn to talk to Kitase and Toriyama. The two Japanese men seem relaxed and smile, but I’m sure they are at least a bit anxious about the fate of their latest creation. Reviews from Western outlets are trickling in, and I ask Kitase what he thinks about the sometimes unfavorable comparisons to more freeform RPGs like Dragon Age Origins.

Freedom

“Yes, Western RPGs are more about freedom. But Final Fantasy is a different sort of game. It is much more akin to watching a movie, where you appreciate the world and are immersed deeply in the story. You get to experience dramatic moments and big events. In that sense, the concept of FFXIII is much more like a first person shooter such as Call of Duty.”

This mention of one of the West’s most successful franchises isn’t accidental. This latest installment of one of Japan’s most recognized series seems to be built around pleasing the West. “We are very excited to see how gamers respond. We have created a completely original world. This was a huge challenge. Working for a HD system like the PS3 asks a lot of our designers. We had to model every object with so much detail, so you would believe these things where real and existed somewhere.”

HD

High quality graphics are very important to the creators. They see it as a way to please that huge and recently discovered group of ‘casual gamers’. “We hope they will be engaged by the graphics and the story. We realize this means some of our fans, who like the more traditional games, might be disappoined in some ways. But we hope they will take this journey with us. If we keep creating traditional games, we stand still, and we want to make steps forward.”

One of the most apparent changes is the battle system. Conflicts with assorted monsters are no longer resolved by issuing orders to all party members. Just one character is under your control, but the roles of your support staff can be changed on the fly from damage dealing to healing to magic and so on. “We showed a demonstration of our vision of battle at E3, three years ago. We wanted combat to be speedy, but also tactical. We told our battle director we wanted these elements to be combined. This is a difficult challenge because tactical and speedy seem to be a contradiction. They have worked for three years on coming up with what we have now. Our need for speediness resulted in the automatic behavior of the other party members. We shifted a lot of the tactics to the preparations before battle, where you assign roles to your characters. Team building has become much more important.”

Sequel

While building teams is now in the hands of the player, the responsibility of building the unique worlds of Pulse and Cocoon rested firmly on the shoulders of the Final Fantasy creators. Even after playing a mere five hours, it feels to me that there is much more to this universe than this story. It seems obvious to continue adventures on these two worlds in a direct sequel. So, will there be a Final Fantasy XIII-2? The men laugh and begin to answer very diplomatically: “That depends on how well the game sells in the West!” But after pressing a bit, Kitase concedes he would very much like to do a direct sequel. “In the past three years we worked both on the world and on the various systems. Creating these systems isn’t very glamourous and can frankly be a bit boring. If we could do a XIII-2, we could direct all our attention to the story and refine what we have already built.”

This is an advantage which will not exist for the team that might create Final fantasy XV (XIV is already announced as an MMO). Every numbered Final Fantasy game stands on its own, and is created starting with a blank slate. Still, elements carry over to become canon, like chocobo, crystals, and archetypcal spells. What elements of FFXIII would Kitase like to carry over into future Final Fantasies?

We do not know if there will be a XV. This depends a lot on the success of XIII. Also, it is difficult to pinpoint elements that are typical Final Fantasy. They are mostly invisible: part of the DNA of the game, that everyone recognizes as typical Final Fantasy. But if there is a XV, I hope the way we wrote our characters carries over. We strived to create believable people of flesh and blood. They are not robots. And they are not super heroes. I hope this humanity is something we will see again.”

Final Fantasy Haeresis XIII

Quote

Description
Final Fantasy Haeresis XIII is not fully confirmed by Square Enix but is rumored to be an Online RPG, part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis compilation, for the Playstation 3. We know nothing official about this game, however Square Enix have published a wordmark. There is no verification that this is true and is rumor until confirmed.

I just finished FFXIII. The ending blew my mind and brought tear in my eyes... I really don't understand why some FF fans disliked FFXIII so much... Their opinions are really bullshit. Less than 10% of their opinions are true, but no big deal seriously. You guys are being so negative.

As they talked about "linear," it's not really big deal, I mean we played a lot of linear RPGs and we really enjoyed it, right?

Side quests: there are just two side-quests. First side-quest is hunting monster missions and second quest is collecting five junks for fixing Vanille's small robot. Hunting monster missions are really fun. It takes several days to finish all 64 monster missions.

The leader character dies and game over, it may be little lame, but come to think of other FF series... When the party dies, you go back to the save point. In FFXIII, it takes you to behind the monsters that where your leader died instead of coming baaaaaaack to the save point.

About the gameplay and battle system, it's very fun and neato. I can see they don't like tasting new stuff, but come on.

About the time length, it took 53 hours and 38 minutes (including completed 28 missions.) They said it's shortest FF, but I really doubt.

I give Final Fantasy XIII a score of 9.5 out of 10.

I agree.

What I loved about the combat system, it heavilly encouraged experimenting with it and there was no set way to do it, it was like "whatever works for you".

In my game, it was really rare that I died first, if I ever got a game over, usually the others went out first. Also, the AI is so well done in this game that I really have no need to control them, 95% of the time they do what I want them to do, and they always know the best coarse of action to take, especially when you cast Libra.

So who wants to punch me for another FF13 statement? :P

Oh, and other thing about those cutscenes, it may have a lot of cutscenes and make it like a movie as you guys said, but when you get on 2nd and 3rd disc, it get less cutscenes till the ending. I mean, why it bothered you? I really enjoyed watching it. I mean again, COME ON!

And you know, FFX, FFX-2, FFXI, and FFXII's cutscenes used same old animation craps again and again and they rarely use new face emotions. In FFXIII, first and second disc didn't use any same animation if I remembered correctly. 3rd disc used same face animations, but not really many times. SE worked really hard a lot with those cutscenes in three years. I'm very impressive. It's worth buying FFXIII, guys.

What are you talking about??? The paradigms system has you moving and switching all the time. Try fighting any boss by letting the game play it else.

I just beat it today, I took today and yesterday off of work just for it :)

9/10 for me. My only complaint would be some silly dialog that pops up from time to time.

I finished all 1 to 50, except 45 and 51 to 64. That 45 (A grade) mob's "Speech" move killed my team with fully buffs. ><;

I'm going to get all five-stars on all completed missions with low than five-stars as while I'm leveling my team up. (If you got five-stars on all Ci'eth missions, you'll unlock this achievement/trophy.)

I am sure it's standards for getting a 5 star is higher than most. I have gotten 5 star on missions 1-35, since I decided to do this after I beat the game. Can't gurantee they will be 5 star going down the road. >_>

Btw, Tonberry battle on mission 34-35(?), epic'lly hilarious.

those who decry the game for its linearity are usually the same people who never really get to see the extent that it branches out towards the end.

Also, the gameplay is great but is kind of hard to appreciate without knowing how to work with it. You'll notice that they only give you free reign of the system from Chapter 10, which almost seems like too late in the game (tho its about little more than 1/2way thru the story pretty much) but in every single chapter before it they force you into different setups with different leaders.. kinda to force you to try different elements within the paradigm system.. and showing you the various strengths and weaknesses of each setup. And this is probably why they cap the crystarium as well.

Without a proper form of limitation, people who don't bother to learn the system could easily level over it to make it unnecessary to use the paradigms much.

I also like the difficulty in XIII. It's actually quite hard compared to older FFs. but this is made possible because they allow you to restart before each battle. otherwise you can totally see people bitching and crying about eidolon battles, a lot more than they already do..

Very well tweaked battle system and engaging story with deep character interaction. Linearity happens to go well with them together. If you take it away, the other 2 components get screwed up too.
