those who decry the game for its linearity are usually the same people who never really get to see the extent that it branches out towards the end.
Also, the gameplay is great but is kind of hard to appreciate without knowing how to work with it. You'll notice that they only give you free reign of the system from Chapter 10, which almost seems like too late in the game (tho its about little more than 1/2way thru the story pretty much) but in every single chapter before it they force you into different setups with different leaders.. kinda to force you to try different elements within the paradigm system.. and showing you the various strengths and weaknesses of each setup. And this is probably why they cap the crystarium as well.
Without a proper form of limitation, people who don't bother to learn the system could easily level over it to make it unnecessary to use the paradigms much.
I also like the difficulty in XIII. It's actually quite hard compared to older FFs. but this is made possible because they allow you to restart before each battle. otherwise you can totally see people bitching and crying about eidolon battles, a lot more than they already do..
Very well tweaked battle system and engaging story with deep character interaction. Linearity happens to go well with them together. If you take it away, the other 2 components get screwed up too.

I loved the Paradigm Shift system. it added a whole new level to strategy to battles. Though at times I did feel a little limited to 6 of them and I felt like I need 1 or 2 more to be safe.
This game definitely gave a lot of love to synergist and saboteurs. I'd never really worried much with buffs until FFXI in fights, but some bosses in XIII could only be effectively fought with them. The only thing was in those last battles, I had a hard time fitting my favorite character Sazh into the mix because I needed a party with 2 medics and a sentinel =/ (Final Boss battle 2 of 3 in particular right after it's ultimate attack and during its debuff form). And once Hope gets Haste there's too much overlap on them. Sazh does still have the best Blitz over everyone else though since it decimates a single target. And Now that I think about it, once Sazh has everyone buffed, you can usually go straight into a Mystic Tower and go nuts. You really didn't need healers that much as 1 hasted healer could handle the load of 2.
Also, the Tonberry CS was the best in the game, hands down. It was completely unexpected and awesome. Plus the fact it was after a very dramatic entrance for a monster that was played up to be extremely hard was great too.

I got owned in the monster hunt, the one with three Tonberry's in one battle. Buffed my characters up to lv.5 in their main roles and gotten most of my equipment maxed out, lets see what we get from there.

Use the three items to get fully buffs and invisible and give them big surprise attack, and then you get five stars.
I changed 1 to 31 to five-stars now. And I just found out how to upgrade maxed weapons to be new weapon like changed Maxed - Lionheart to be 16lvl. Ultima Weapon. Ultima Weapon got like 35 level to be maxed.

The challenge here with weapons is determining which has the better effect to the situation. You could probably have 6 versions of the Ultimate weapon for that char. Because each Ultimate weapon requires a transmodeggon ( sp? ) for its catylist, that can be rather time consuming to do for each char. Nice way to waste time on the game

Not so, you can get 3 trapethingies from one, including 36 stones that are worth a lot.
Get Vanille's Belladona Road or Fang's Taming Rod. Max them out, then get a trap material by getting 2m gil or getting one of Adamantoise. One you get one, max one of those two weapons out, then level them to the max. Then break them dismantle them and you will get three traps and 36 of some other stone that is worth a lot.
This is information I got from a friend of mine. Saving 2 million to get one.
