Hi folks,
I'm currently raising a racing bird; hopefully one that will be able to beat MeteorBrian, Invincible Leg, and Star Onion in the free runs.
Current, my bird's stats are as follows
Day 60
Strength: 1st Class
Endurance: 1st Class
Discernment: Average
Receptivity: Poor
Traits: Gallop
At this point, I'm spamming the "Curious Chocobo" story in an effort to teach my bird "Canter" but am at a crossroads on what stats to improve next.
As shown in this youtube video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SDCdOpyiNY
A bird with
Strength: 1st Class
Endurance: Impressive
Discernment: Better than Average
Receptivity: Average
Traits: Gallop & Canter
can defeat the superbirds without items
However, as quoted by "Lordkronos" in the following post,
http://www.killingifrit.com/forums.php?m=posts&q=143903&d=30
A bird with
Strength: 1st Class
Endurance: 1st Class
Discernment: Impressive
Receptivity: Poor
Traits: Gallop & Canter
would be better.
So my question is whether investing chocobucks to raise Receptivity without hurting STR and END is a good idea or if its better to spend all the chocobucks in increasing Discernment.
Thanks for any future responses,
Zubon

Interesting thing I just found on the wiki.
"Running Speed: Strength X Discernment + Endurance. Running Time: Endurance X Receptivity + Strength + Chocobo riding gear. (No one knows how much time a level in various stats is worth, but we do know that 1 level in Endurance is worth more than one level in strength. But having level one endurance will make your bird run slow on the field.)"
My chocobos stats are pretty close to yours right now and this would make sense. My chocobo starts out quick but slows down early in the race. I'm guessing yours would do the same thing with only one point in receptivity. I think raising that would be the safest bet. All I've seen from SE on chocobo stats is "A chocobo’s attributes directly affect its performance in a race. While each attribute is important, players will find that a high “strength” rating will give most chocobos an advantage on the track. However, we would like to stress that balance is also necessary." This also seems to imply that having a little of every stat is important to racing.

Good question, and awsome finds, Zubon.
I am currently working on my chooc, Black Female, DarkLily. At the moment she is at:
STR: First-Class (capped)
END: Impressive
DSC: Average
RSC: Poor
Abilities: Gallop
I have the story for Canter, just waiting till she learns it. My plan was to fully cap out STR and END, then raise DSC to Impressive to fully cap the bird over all.
I can, however, personally confirm that having a bird with First-Class STR and END fully capped, IS better than a bird with First-Class STR and END just high enough to cross the FC thresh hold. So... It's tough to say...
I'm going to do a little more reading, though... I might change my own plan...
I will probably try both. Once I finish and retire DarkLily, I will try the youtube choco setup on my blue.

Can that video be reproduced every time?
My Chocobo is First Class/Outstanding/Average/Average/Gallop/Canter (all points maxed out) and he will not beat the 3 super chocobos like that.
If I use an item, like a Speed Apple, I can get lucky vs 1.. not sure on all 3. I'm sure over time I'll be able to have a few lucky streaks, but that video is rather amazing.

Actually that video is very correct. I have breed a chocobo very, almost exactly the same as the persons in the video. Only mines red :3
Strength: First-class
Endurance: Outstanding
Discernment: Better than average
Receptivity: Average
Gallop + Cantar
Just to state that Gallop AND Cantar are so very important for racing. These two mean hit or miss on most races. Each chocobo is different, ive raised about 5-6 and each one was different in commands. iirc I had a bird who was insane with sprinting, another who could endure the entire race, both really sucked at end sprinting. My boyfriend on the other hand had a chocobo who was insane at end sprits. Im still unsure what causes that, whether its the affection level thru being a kid or something but each bird is different. Try to play around with them.
With the 3 race against Star, meteor and invincible, tell your jockey to sprint at the end. Since they all have the command to even out their stamina thru the race, your bird will beat them in the end. Also the other chocobos that are behind like to throw biscuits at the leaders. It would suck if your bird was the leader and got hit. its better to catch at the last minute then be the chocobo that gets bombed lol.
This also works well with the single races, have your chocobo sprint at the end so whoever is in the lead gets hit with the biscuits and youll pass them np, even if your recept and disc are low.

Is there any way of pulling off a 'winning combination' with care plans? I've run into dead-end after dead-end in regards to raising chocobucks for the training tokens. It just costs so much gil to run free runs all day and I can't win a C4 Circuit race to save my life. I've got a chocobo right now with First-Class Strength, Outstanding Endurance and Poor everything else with no abilities but it's not long before I can't raise it's stats with care plans so insight for the next bird would be lovely. All the plans I've read about thus far rely just too heavily on training tokens for me to be able to call it feasible, not with my current chocobo anyway.
