I think I used wheel elementals until 50+ish. They're ok for slight hate increase but unless your MBing them, they're hardly worth the damage. The only tools you really need are shadows, paralyze, slow and blind.

Yeah, it is... But I still do it just to piss off those mages that cast too slow themselves.
Oh, and update: I just ding'd 62, and using Kogitsunemaru/Kabutowari +1, and I'm loving it.

It's situational and mostly beneficial when you solo. If you're soloing, you cant cast it at your leisure when you pull the mob.
As far as parties go, you shouldn't need to paralyze unless you really don't have a mage to do it, in which case cast it when the mob comes into range from a pull. The two outcomes is that your puller loses his shadows which he'll need to recast anyway or you pull hate with paralyze after a DD draws initial hate after which you'd simply voke to lock hate on you. You may lose a shadow in the process but I think having the mob paralyzed more than makes up for one lost shadow.
