First off, Im writing this guide because I see alot of Rangers complain about being 1 shotted or having terrible defense. So I will post my Defense gear for 60 and uncapped.

For 60 caps, Im the only person on Fenrir right now, that goes Ranger/White Mage.
I use Whitemage sub for Diaga mostly for the /NIN users. Stoneskin and Blink come in real handy. Cures come in handy when you need them on occasion, Bloody bolts can also do the trick if your using Xbow.. As follows is my 60CAP gear.

Main: Terra Staff.
Sub: Mythril Grip +1
Ranged: Heavy Crossbow+1
Ammo: Acid,Holy,Bloody,Sleep,Darksteel Bolts.
Head: Hunter's Beret.
Neck: Jagd Gorget.
Earring: Stotic Earring
Earring: Insomnia Earring
Body: Hunter's Jerkin
Hands: Protecting Bangles
Ring: Rajas Ring
Ring: Marksmans Ring
Back: Bullseye Cape
Waist: R.K. Belt +1
Legs: Hunter's Braccae
Feet: Hunter's Socks

Sometimes I'll use Tav Taco for Defense if its a small match. Usually around 6vs6~ Anything much bigger I'll use Coreul Subs. Alot of Rangers dont use status bolts, Because they LOVE the high sidewinder damage, Which is real nice. I prefer Xbow mainly because its fast and deals nice damage. On occasions you can get 2 Bolts off to one Arrow.

Whitemage sub benefits: Auto Regen + Self buffs such as Protect, Shell, Stoneskin, Blink, Regen, Cure's are all very nice to Ranger Survivablity to make up for our wet toilet paper natural defense. I can get 381 Defense in 60 cap as RNG/WHM. When /NIN users try to fight you Diaga will be ur best friend. Low MP usage and it usually causes them to just turn and run from you. If they recast Utsusemi just re-Diaga them. Then Barrage > Slug, if they try to run just Shadowbind if up. SAM's Seigan, Thirdeye usually is tough to get by. Most SAM's on Fenrir if they attack me and are hitting 0 because my Stoneskin they usually just run, unless its a 1vs1 situation, If you are stuck in a 1vs1 Shadowbind and you can spam Sleep Bolts till Third Eye is off and sleep lands, then Barrage > Slug or even Eagle Eye Shot. they usually have fairly weak defense if you manage to land a acid bolt on them.

Xbow Benefits: Sleep Bolts! Major upside, Anyone who fights with me 60 or uncapped otherwise, Know I use them alot. Same with Acid and Holy. Bloody I rarely use because I save for when im out of MP to cure myself.

Now for Uncapped. @_@ Long Post so far... Alright in uncapped im usually never beaten in a 1vs1 situation, During Dio's or OM's. However there are times like everyone else where you are so you adjust and kill them next time. Only person to really have a even 1:1 Ratio of Killing/Dying is Machtkeiser (SP Sorry if Spelt wrong) He uses the run tactic if I get Barrage off on him, as his DRK/RDM Setup. Anyways. In Uncapped I always go Ranger/Redmage, Yes another Defense Build. Currently my gear is as follows.

Main: Terra Staff
Sub: Mythril Grip +1
Ranged: Othinus' Bow
Ammo: Darksteel,Holy,Bloody,Acid,Sleep
Head: Genbu's Kabuto OR Crimson Mask, I usually switch the 2 out on occations
Neck: Either Breeze Gorget if no THF's are currently in the match, or Jagd Gorget otherwise.
Earring: Loquacious Earring
Earring: Tracker's Earring
Body: Kirin's Osode
Hands: Crimson Finger Gauntlets
Ring: Rajas Ring
Ring: Aqua Ring, Or on occastions Behemoth Ring.
Back: Amemet Mantle +1
Belt: R.K. Belt +1
Legs: Crimson Cuisses
Feet: Suzaku's Sune-Ate

Currently im the only Ranger who goes RNG/RDM on Fenrir, but I have seen on occastion Sircyrus go RNG/RDM but his gear is completely different from my setup. With this including food, I have 527 Defense,
Redmage Sub Benefits: PHALANX! Big bonus although your enhancing is low. It comes in handy alot. Stoneskin, Blink, Blazespikes are good to keep up also. Same as with Whitemage sub. /NIN users can be easily taken down. But for the tough /SAM or SAM people, DISPEL! Keep enough MP up for Dispel. VERY VERY handy in taking either Seigan or Third Eye Away. Once those are down they are pretty easy to bring down.

I have tried many different subs for RNG, Including BLU,SAM,WAR,NIN but ive found that Whitemage and Redmage subs are really more helpful to staying alive WHILE doing good damage. Although the other subs have thier fair share of Benefits, Such as /SAM you can Slug shot or Sidewinder spam yes. But if you get caught with thirdeye down you can be basically 1 shotted depending on the Weaponskill. Reminder this is just all personal preference from my experiences.

During the matchs I can stay pretty much on the front lines and spam acid and sleep bolts, as well as Holy. And not have to worry about someone just jumping me for like 700 damage.

This is Darkin Eve btw, I notice you go all out DEF gear but use rajas, Jelly ring is another option, and as for suvival abilities, Machine/Repeating bow is very nice, using that you can also pull of 5~600slugs depends on acid/job and its bloody bolt spamage is basically invincible no DD can DD fast enough to keep up, can even recover from those nasty souleater guilli's np, that goes to everyone, not pointing at eve here XD, and to RNGs who are only 75RNG (assuming eve has loq.ear from a mage job) i go trakcer/insomnia just couse of mp/hp resist sleep, and to RNGs who do/try the rng/rdm set-up, the tracker earring is a life saver thfs hit for 0 sometimes, WS's sometimes dont even kill you in red HP, Oh and grips, you can also go for the axe grip replacing the 2VIT 2STR for 3STR 20HP, oh and ima start comming rng/rdm to uncap just couse you never mentioned me XD i shall be noticed! thats my 2cent, hope it helps ppl wantin to try this.

Thanks Darkin, Today I bought a Machine Xbow. Im going to attempt to put it to use tonights Uncapped OM.
Those RNG's attempting to try the Jelly Ring in your arsonal, Keep in mind DRK's can break your stoneskin with 1 Drain2 with it equiped. Possibly Drain1 also. Tracker Earring is indeed a lifesavor

Earring stacked ontop of DEF Build with Terra staff is a whopping -50% Physical Damage. And its real cheap of only 2-5k on most servers.

It's a good chunk of HP for only 2 slots, although I kinda gave up on playing the defensive RNG because stoneskin isn't gonna help when everyone is like "OMG RNG KILL" and gank me 24/7. :dozingoff

I play RNG/WHM in 60 caps sometimes. I'm usually never killed either. It's really a great combo. Sadly, on Ramuh, 60 caps are the only caps that really get played (and that's only on certain days/times, if you're lucky), so I don't get to experiment too much. ; ;

I'd reccomend Garrulous Ring over Rajas Ring for DEF builds. It gives you Resist Silence to help you resist (along with Bar Aero/Silence you'll be fine) Unyielding Ring is also a good option insted, good all around defensive stats.
