3DS Max background + shadows. help me plz :D

ok im currently makeing my own sig with 3ds max9 and im haveing trouble adding a background that also has shadows. i can have a background... or shadows, but not both. can anyone help me out plz. i got some pictures to show what im talking about.


and the one with shadows is my sig.

Create a Plane and put it at the base of your model. level the plane to the right angle of teh ground in the Background.

Create a material using Matte/shadow and apply to the Plane, this will allow you to project a shadow without seeing the plane.

ok i tried this and got completely lost... furthest i got is adding the plane at the base of my models. i think im applying the background in a different way then you. im going to rendering >> environment >> environment map. then loading the pic. :\ im so lost.

  1. Open Material Browser
  2. Click Standard
  3. Select Matte/shadow
  4. Drag the material onto the plane
  5. Add lighting
  6. Render your image


That should work.

ok this time i got to standard... where is matte/shadow? and how do i drag the material onto the plane? im really new at 3DS sorry ><

wow was that sped up or normal speed? that was crazy. lol this will help alot thanks. now, how do u get those pics of areas in game? that dem looks amazing.

It was normal speed and it was just a simple sig happy.gif


And the dem in my sig is just a normal screenshot editted in The gimp.

nice for lighter shadows on the matte/shadow material options change the shadow number.

or add and onmi light.

ok, i did a mr area omni light, i dont really mind how the shadow looks, ill mess with it later when i get the time.

Ya lighting is probbably the hardest part to get correct. i use a skylight with settings of 35 rays per sample and 1.5 multiplier oh and shadows on.
