Ok, this has probably been answered before but I can't seem to find it. I heard that the male determines the color... is that true? Or is it both parents?

Both parents, their parent's parents, their parent's parent's parents, and how cruel SE is feeling at that particular moment in time.

No really, you can breed a first generation black with another first generation black and get a yellow. It's partially random, but yes, genetics from both chocobos are called in. There's a chance that doing the right breeding plan will help; supposedly some of the breeding plan/date things you can send the chocos on will help the baby to get the traits from either the father or mother. The little kid that sends them out will tell you more about this. I don't know how effective it is at getting the color you want, though.

Yes, 60 chocobucks I believe, but it's only temporary as far asI know and only changes your choco's colour on the field (not in stables/racing as far as I know)

Follow up post: I myself was breeding a new chocobo when I answered the first time. I had two cards, a blue and a black, and the choco just turned into a yellow teenager. (White tips.) Apparently there's a lot of speculation on the wiki that it might actually have something to do with how high the bird's skills are (and which skills) when they turn into adolescents, but honestly, nobody really knows. Just don't count on a special color.
