You can buy scope in Nashmau, and Drum Magazine fails beyond failing.
Just make a trip to Nashmau, and save getting Drum Magazine for when you just want all the attachments, and have money to burn, or get it in ENM.

Scope, Turbo Charger, then your standard selection of accuracy and attack boosting attachments. Also, Coiler if you can get your hands on it. Anything to help your puppet hit the mob and build TP.
Though don't expect to be the top DD in any situation that you're not solo in. No doubt PUP can do a fair share of damage, but jobs like WAR and SAM will generally (read: almost always, assuming they aren't gimped) outclass us in DPS, especially in later levels. (though admittedly, PUP does very well at the lower levels with proper attachments)

Please don't take this as being mean, but i'm sorry the bolded bit is just wrong info. OP please disregard it.
At any level, the total dot from both the master and the automaton is comparable to any other DD. Yes, it takes more attention on my part to get my PUPs party contribution up there as opposed to say my MNK, but it can be done with a lil effort. I've had friends keep tabs on my dmg as PUP at all lvls and with average to average/high-end geared dd's, PUP can keep up just fine.
True, with the uber DD(riddell users, BB MNK, etc.) you will lag behind some. But really against those guys EVERY normal to normal-high DD gets left in the dust.
Is it easy for a PUP to be played badly? Of course. Just like a THF can be played hella- well AND hella-bad, PUP is in that same boat. Don't let anyone say that your PUP is a sub-par anything.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Back on topic tho-
Stick with it OP, there are always shortages of various attachments on the AH. And then when the ones you want come in, you can count on some gouging occasionally. Eventually tho, you'll get the ones you need and don't think you have to just quit PUP until you get them.
Just keep on trucking and you'll be fine.
Anyways, back to cranking out points on my claws. I'm only on lvl 28 ; ;

Hmm. It occurs to me that what you consider "uber DD" I consider to be pretty standard. MNKs who don't have a black belt, WARs without a Ridill or Joytoy, SAMs with no Hagun or better. Players like that are below the general curve of what I expect out of DD in 2008.
This might just be because I've become very jaded after being in HNM for so long, but seriously, the game has been out long enough that these type of weapons and gear should be fairly standard across all servers.
But excluding people using that kind of gear, yes, you should be parsing roughly the same or better than those players.

i love pup and ill admit they dont deserve the lol stamp they get. but for u to say they leave normal/high end DDs in the dust is far from truth. granted at bird camp they do some good dmg w/ that rng pet but when the mob dies so fast from ur drgs or sams penta thrusting them its TP gain aint much. is pup good DD yes. does it compare to those others not really. can it keep up and do a good job if played well, yes. its all about how u play the job and how ur gear is. but theres just no comparison at bird camp pup vs. drg for example. sorry to write such a long post lol but yeah sharpshot frame can do good dmg even without all the attachments scope is a must have shame they dont have scope II. if u want best dmg in pt sharpshot is gonna be ur best option when vs. flying mobs.

I see where you are coming from. From a HNM/EG view with all these guys in high-end r/e stuff, your sentiment is prolly true. But i still say ANY job not in that scene(and truthfully, as much as ppl try and claim that they are, what percentage of player truly belong to the super high end scene?) will lag behind those guys just as far as a PUP played to the hilt would.
-----------------------------------------
@Rhikko
Never claimed PUP leaving anyone in the dust. But at the same time, played well, PUP can hang toe to toe with other DDs. And lets look at your example to illustrate my point.
*I've seen DRG easily bust ~1500 at bird camp. And seen spikes past 2k. Then add the lil bit in from their wyvern, thats a nice bit a dmg contribution from 1 player.
*The few times i've been coaxed out there on my PUP, my breakdown is like this. About 400~500 ish HF(with spikes to 700s) and then 1100~1300 AP from Klaxon. Forgot the master's dmg didn't ya? Even alot of us PUPs do...
Anecdotal as my estimates of DRG on birds may be, i honestly DO see a comparison between PUP and DRG dmg. And was my main point, i see PUP as a comparable job to most any other job in the game. Even moreso now that SE is obviously not afraid of making the job too strong any more with our recent additions(and by these i mean Coiler, PUPs addition to much more DD gear, and Stringing Pummel).

lol no i didnt forget the masters dmg maybe an lolpup wouldnt factor in it, but im talkin about tp gain in general a drg gets fast TP and can pretty much spam penta as /sam where as the pets TP gain isnt as fast its not getting that haste/march from the party. then again i always merit w/ 2brd pt so maybe thats where we are differing in. anyway yeah pup isnt bad im just glad we got a way better WS with stringing pummel.

Rule #16 in the PUP forums : No matter what the thread is about, even if it's about kittens vs. kangaroos in a drunken boxing match, it always derails into a lolPUP discussion.
But yea, pretty much all you'll need is Acc, Att, Racc, and you'll be fine.

Automatons get potent double attack and haste. What other pet gets that? Wyverns can get double attack, but it is much less potent.
I parse every merit party I am in as PUP, and I have never fallen more than 3% behind any DD aside from the obvious ones at bird camp (RNG's, and pimp THF's, specifically my LS leader.) There is absolutely nothing wrong with PUP's damage at this point, it easily compares to other melee jobs. The only problems with PUP comes with the mage frames, which aren't used in TP burn parties under normal circumstances.
Anyone who tells you PUP still lacks something when it comes to merit parties, hasn't seen a decent PUP lately.
P.S. I was staring at the stats on Kenkonken for about an hour, and I couldn't get over how ridiculously overpowered it sounds in my head.
Spamming Ice Maneuvers for nukes and never overloading. Spamming Thunder Maneuvers for Double Attack +45%(or whatever the currently accepted number is), and never overloading. On top of the increased accuracy, attack, and double attack rate for both Master AND puppet... and then there's the reduced delay from the enhanced martial arts... I seriously cannot get over it. o_o
Already started saving up my Alexandrite. >_<

I want to see Howling Fist replaced with Stringing Pummel. >_> That weapon skill averages 700-800 with 1400 spikes. That's an easy 2k damage when combined with the puppet.
While you can't cast haste on the puppet, it does get haste and double attack attachments to help speed up TP gain. Pantin Dastanas even give +3% haste to the puppet. <3
