Novv the Whitehearted

I have a quick inquiry. I was camping Novv the Whitehearted w/ my girl to get her a Minstrel's Coat. When he finally popped I landed a Chi Blast for 50 dmg, yet it stayed Yellow and a competing Taru was able to stake claim on it by engaging (Attack). What the hell happened here? I was under the impression that if Chi Blast lands on anything, it gets claimed. Sure, I've failed to be 1st claim before, but to land it and not get claim is a new one to me. Was it a glitch? Is there something I don't know about this NM? If the other player had hax, would it negate my Chi? Never really camped HNM's, so I have no idea what it would look like if a hack or bot was used. Opinions please

I've seen this happen too, did the NM by chance aggro the taru or maybe link to something he was fighting before you chi blasted it? Seems as if it takes a more substantial amount of damage to turn a mob's name red if it is already linked onto or aggroed onto another player. You can even get it headed towards you with a yellow name while any action the other player takes on it will change the name color and claim the mob against you. I've killed links on people where the name never changed color until after i landed a weapon skill or attacked for a few rounds.
GL getting that Minstrel's Coat though, it's a sweet piece

Yeah it actually popped right next to the little bugger and he was fighting a Sahagin already. So he probably got aggro & link. Thanks for your input and the well wishes^^ We got the drop last night.

Happens a lot lately for some reason. The worst being a yellow Faf and everyone starts attacking at once. Guess it's all about that damage output to finally hit the claim. Usually with a 300+ shield bash from an Aegis Pld works.
I think it has to do with what Daddyx said. Aggro from other crap prolly kept it unclaimed. What a drag. It's a hard pull too.

Unfortunately it's been that way for awhile, atleast a year by my recollection.
I just pull everything with EES and there is no problems.

That's odd, because from my experience, when a mob pops (Normal or NM), it takes like 3-4 seconds to be able to aggro/link. And I find weird that Fafhogg gets to aggro someone before a LS claims XD

could it be the anti bot system that keeps nms from popping claimed?

Yeah, SE patched the way the claiming system works a long time ago.
Basically - A monster won't be "claimed" unless a player has the "highest" hate on a monster compared to other players.
So if three players attacked it: one used provoke, one used chi blast, and one used dia, then person that used provoke will probably get it.
If not, it will stay yellow and stay yellow until a player gains enough hate to claim it.

You are going to make people get mad with the necro bumping, this forum doesnt care how long a thread is, its all about how long it's been dead. Not trying to jump you myself but now you're warned I suppose.

How about what page a thread is in a forum section? This topic was in page 1, it was in the bottom 1/3rd of page 1's thread list but it was still in page 1.
So thread necro bumping is against the rules?
If so, I suggest the rules should be changed to allow any threads on page 1, regardless of how old or how "dead" it is.
Anyway I just wanted to post just in case someone happens to have the same question about claiming.
I see the question has been "semi-answered" but not "fully answered", I gave an explanation that hate affects who will claim the monster.
It's still on page 1 and people will still be able to read it. And people who use the "search function" can search this thread and will see the answer to the question in two posts.
I know thread necromancy by date worked WHEN the board used to be very active, with new threads pouring in every day, but now, the board is rarely has new threads and is a lot less active than it used to be.
Because of that, we have situations where a thread is still on page 1 but "too old to be bumped".
If it's rule, I suggest a change to allow bumping or posting anything on first page of any forum section, regardless of how "old" it is.

Necro-bumping is not a problem if you have some kind of new and relevant information to contribute. Responding directly to a conversation that died three months ago is just gauche.

Yes, I will note that now because I've necro bumped in a thread on the blackmage forum with no relevant information.
However, my "necro bumping" post above is relevant to the discussion and the thread IMO.
I did respond to a conversation but I also provided more information regarding the question.
The question was about the new "claim system" SE put in a while back ago.
It was "semi-answered", it was never fully explained:

These are the only answers in regards to the topic starter's question.
However, note that the answers did not explain that "enmity" is the reason for claiming.
It's not fully explained but answered when the posters above said "probably got aggro and link" and "guess it's all about damage outpost", however neither of them fully explain it.
My "thread necrobumping" post above explained that it all depends on the enmity the player has, thus my post was very relevant to the discussion.
Also here's the POL update page which introduces the claiming change.
