RICHMOND, Va. -- Scientists have confirmed the second case of a "virgin birth" in a shark.

In a study reported Friday in the Journal of Fish Biology, scientists said DNA testing proved that a pup carried by a female Atlantic blacktip shark in the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center contained no genetic material from a male.

The first documented case of asexual reproduction, or parthenogenesis, among sharks involved a pup born to a hammerhead at an Omaha, Neb., zoo.

"This first case was no fluke," Demian Chapman, a shark scientist and lead author of the second study, said in a statement. "It is quite possible that this is something female sharks of many species can do on occasion."

I don't know about the rest of you heathens. But I for one, welcome our new aquatic savior.

Considering how ancient and largely unchanged the shark family (genus, order? I don't know) is, I can't say I'm surprised that parthenogenesis persists. Although, this wouldn't really be Shark-Jesus. The pup is going to be female, seeing as it had no male to contribute a Y-chromosome, unless sharks are somehow capable of swapping sex like some fish and amphibians. Either way, I'm just glad that it's a shark. Coelocanth-Jesus would be one ugly motherfucker, but sharks are at least attractive in a sleek "about to bite your head off" kind of way.

It can still be a female and be shark Jesus. It should be another shark generation or so before the Holy Pacific Shark Church is founded and then awhile until there's an officially recognized Shark-Dogma.

Can you guys even read properly? This is not the first case where a virgin shark have given birth. It has happened before few years ago from a hammer head. This phenomenon also occurs in other animals.
If people would stop wasting their time with games and actually go out into the world they would discover a lot of new things.

Oh was that some smug I sensed there?

Maybe you missed how it says that this isn't the first time it's happened in the bottom line of the portion I quoted. I don't know how much more obvious I could have made it without putting lol j/k!!!!11! and a smiley at the end.

Lighten up. Embrace shark-jesus. He loves you (With ketchup).

After several years of being on the internet, you should have learned by now that there's no such thing as being too blatant and obvious. You'd think that if you hit someone in the back of the head hard enough that you'd give them amnesia or possibly a bad case of death, but when it comes to the 'net, a decapitating blow still won't dent some skulls.
