That's my post on the math. I think it's a viable option if you have Polearm merits, and might outdamage GA at bird camps. I'm still not sure I'd do it, but I don't think it's bad to have a few damage types available to you. If you get Energetic Eruca in Nyzul, for instance, you could just switch to Polearm and kill him.

I was just wondering if it actually beats out Gaxe in merits.

Thanks for this, good to know WAR can manage a 6 hit at least.

No no, you asked if it was "worthwhile" not if it was "better than". Spade yourself in the derocks please. Let's make a better future together by writing you out of the picture.

Sorry if worthwhile doesn't mean better than, I'll make myself more clear next time.
Regardless, I still haven't gotten a totally clear answer (probably because the first question wasn't clear enough).

As far as I know. There hasn't been any actual testing on it. I do think a WAR would do great with it since they have the same skill levle as a SAM.
Anyway, my friend said by eyeballing it her Raging Rushes were doing more damage than Penta. However she did admit to having 8/8 Great Axe for merits. And the added damage from normal swings should be considered to.

War penta's would probably be better than Sam's since we have more DA available (by that I mean merits), access to Hecatomb for Dex and Zergressor... But overall, why not just use Gaxe, it will probably perform just as well on Birds, and better everywhere else.

Well that's the thing, I'll have 8/8 Polearm and 0/8 Gaxe, so I'm just wondering if it will out damage Gaxe (which it very well may, by the sounds of it).

While WAR does have very slightly better gear available for penta, capped overwhelm more than makes up for this and SAM pentas average considerably more.

Even if you're 0/8 gax and 8/8 polearm I can't see you out doing gax. If you really want to use polearm just go Drg to merits there's a reason jobs have A+ weapons and it's not that B- weapons are better. If there's one thing that SE did fairly well it's balancing damage through jobs, weapons, gear, and merits using a polearm a War could easily lose 25% damage through loss of att, acc, 6 hit build, etc. Seriously though people need to use the search function there's like 2-3 threads about this already.
This is what I put in another thread just since the lazy people probably won't bother searching:
"Skill we have 240 vs 276 Loses approximately 13% att and 12% acc. Our best polearm now is Engetsuto, (besides Leviathan's Couse good luck getting that,) vs something easy to get like Byakko's Axe you're talking a decrease of 5% in DPS.
Now the important thing too, Store TP and hits to 100% tp, GAX base delay 504 = 13.7 tp per hit so it takes 7 hits + WS to hit 100% vs Engetsuto delay 480 = 13 same thing 7 hits + WS to hit 100%. Ok add on a Rajas Ring and Brutal Earring though GAX = 14.5% tp takes only 6 hits + WS to hit 100% vs Engetsuto = 13.7 even with the extra 2 tp that Penta Thrust gives you're still only hitting 99% TP with 6 hits + WS. Now you can add on stuff like chiv chain to bring Penta Thrust to a 7 hit combo but you're again sacrificing acc and att GAX can reach that without worrying about losing their Jailer torque or PCC.
Getting right down to it as well Penta Thrust vs Raging Rush on paper Penta Thrust looks pretty good but penta is an acc based WS and can't crit. From what my experience with Penta Thrust it seems to suffer from acc penalties @100% TP a bit like Sidewinder. Overall you're trading a lot for using a polearm to get a 1.25% dam increase on it. I haven't parsed it myself but logic tells me that GAX would be very close or possibly even still beat polearm on colibri meripo."
I'd also like to remind people that Penta Thrust's WS modifiers aren't quite as good as Raging Rush.

I think the overwhelm only applies to the first hit of Penta.

Get 2 Sam's.
Same gear.
1 w/ capped Overwhelm, 1 w/o it.
& just keep Penta Thrusting for hours and keep track of how many hits per ws.
& Fuck you Stoned. My War is merit onry. lol
