Orwell's book 1984 was just another one of those high school civ readings that most everyone forgot within a few months of scrapping together a report from cliffnotes for the midterm. I, however, read it cover-to-cover, and I was relatively impressed with it--perhaps it was the manipulation of entire societies, or maybe the suspense.
But one of the aspects of the book that really stuck with me was the degredation of the language spoken by the society portrayed. The desecration of the English language achieved by the government further numbed the minds of the people it withheld, and called it "newspeak". Dictionaries and old literature were burned, and the citizens were gradually forced to condense or otherwise replace much of the vocabulary with quick, easy-to-use words. An overripe banana would be called something like badfruit, for example.
Cue modern day. U, R, RLY, WAT, and other such "abbreviations" of words are so commonplace that even intelligent and educated people use them on a daily basis. Sure, most everyone uses them on the internet, and even the dialect is named after it. Text messages, e-mails, instant messages, and a vast majority of communications use it predominately. What I merely began to dismiss as myself aging has begun to make me ponder on the effects of this new language. "How could so many people be so lazy as to not even type a yo or re?" "How did this come about--did everyone just wake up one day and felt the need to express themselves in the most asinine way possible?"
I'm very strongly against this newspeak. Language is not meant to be a bare-bones way to communicate--if so, we can just stick to grunts and body language. Although this feeling may be just purely psychosematic--since I've been called a grammar Nazi plenty of times, I could almost imagine the "oppressed" cry out their suffering like some stinkin' hippies. And I fucking hate hippies.
Final thing. I'm partially dyslexic, and there is no goddamn reason why one should leave his y key still in the plastic.

Similarly, flame wars of any nature are just poorly actualized 2-Minute Hates, yet here we all are.

Amen to both of these.
