So i'm looking to learn Japanese for various reasons and I've put in a good amount of research into the resources necessary. Among them I realize I will need a guide to the language, a bilingual dictionary, a guide to kana/gana, and a book on kanji, as well as some sort of audio accompanying said resources. The only problem out of all of those is the actual guide to the language. Does anyone have any experience with specific books via personal experience or books in college they may have used? All the ones I seem to find on amazon get debunked for some reason and people refer to other books, which are debunked and refer to....etc. Most importantly, I would like to become more fluent in spoken Japanese than written. Both are important and I intend to do it all, but I am putting more emphasis on understanding the spoken language first.
PS. don't recommend rosetta stone. i tried using it and it was terrible with no cohesion between what you were seeing and how to use it.

Any bi-linguals that can offer a helping hand?

According to Micheal Phelps, Rosetta Stone is the fascist way to learn.
