What's everyone's experience with this guy? I first camped him for about 1-2 weeks solid and ended up going 0/12 with TH1, didn't really have any competition but I did spend a lot of my time in Fei'Yin
Lately I've just been going there randomly in the chance that he'll pop.
Now I'm 0/16 and I'm getting slightly pissed off, do these things even exist? I don't even need them that badly but I still want them. I keep hearing people going 1/1 when it's unclaimed as they make their way to Eastern, and half the time they don't even need it.

Welcome to the world if FFXI.
And had you spent that solid 1-2 weeks farming you probably could have picked up a pair from the AH.
That's what I did.
I'm sure you'll get the drop in three claims or less though.

2/6 on E. Shadow bows
0/7 on W. Shadow h2h
2/4 on cassie earrings during that time xD
(all with th4, thf/dnc works nice for solo'n here, and violent flourish is decent claimer. nothing beats having a radar and a voke)

I have Retaliators, so they certainly exist. I spent something like a week down in Fei'yin, having to set my alarm to wake up at godawful hours of the night to maintain my death grip on the window. I think my overall total was something like 1 out of 12 or so claims. For what it's worth, I went down just before a maintenance and managed to log in to the thing already beating on me. That was an unpleasant few seconds, given I was Bard/Thief, but that was the kill that netted my Retaliators.

while camping Eastern Shadow I managed to get the Retaliators 3/14 or so, mind you I had others with me so they didn't go to waste =p so it would seem that you being at 0/16 now... well at this point you cant give up.. kinda like my exp camping for Vali's Bow after I had gone 0/10 for my friend.. I realized if i stop now then all the time I've put in so far will have been meaningless. however, I am 0/15+ on both Southern and Northern Shadows. as mentioned before welcome to FFXI lol

0/21 <_>
Buying them would be pointless, like a guy said above, it would make all the time I've put in to this worthless, and I can't stop until I have them. Not only that, it's an unnecessary 800k I have to spend, I don't really need these and the only reason I want it is for the occasion that I need to use my MNK in a level cap - Pulling the Plug, it would come very handy in, but I'm not prepared to spend that money when I can do it just as easily with another weapon, Retaliators would help a great deal however.

Drop rates on ffxi are balls; never camp an NM unless you enjoy camping them or like to bitch about drop rates.
What the person said about farming is true, you can farm for 2~3 weeks and have enough to buy just about any item on AH. (depending on your level, anything 75+ can farm stuff easy {even bard}).
NM camping is like gambling, you win and you lose. Something you only do every now and then when you have nothing better to do.

1/25!

Oh and if you're wondering about the gear, it didn't re-equip after DK.
