Is it best to skill up using the Fisherman's gears, or not using it?

If its anything like skilling up any other trade, the +1 items you have on can't hurt your skill ups, only help. Eg. If you were fishing something that would cap your skill at 90 but your actual skill was 89 and you had +3 skill (making your "virtual" skill lvl 92) you would still get normal skill ups. There's not really any point to taking it off. I'm not a fisherman tho so I'm not sure if its the same for you.
