Hello,
I've been playing FFXI since PS2 release in North America, so I've been on Caitsith server for about six years or so. I recently took a break from the game, and now that I'm back I'm considering moving to a new server. Caitsith doesn't seem to be as active as it once was, and a lot of my old friends have since moved on.
I'm interested in a server with a vast array of players, populated but not crowded, and above all friendly and helpful people. Any recommendations, or is this a pipe dream?

Considering Switching Servers

Mmph, there's friendly people on every server, so your best shot is to go to a high-populated server for a better chance at meeting one of them. Really though, assholes outnumber them by a long shot in most cases.

Go to server forums and check out the shit-storm that is Odin.
Oh, move there too, lots of people!

Odin has well, has A LOT of people so I would watch out. I don't think most people understand when people say its "popular" haha.
I would check out Farie? Or something like that, seems medium populated with nice people =)
I play on odin personally a lot of people and I enjoy it.

Odin is a decent server with decent people. The things to note are:
1) It is closed to switching and they are offering free moves OFF of Odin because it is too crowded.
2) High Japanese population (if that matters to you, good or bad)
3) No Ballista or Brenner on the server really and I know a lot of people like that kind of stuff.
Basically everyone is 75 x several jobs and it seems to be mostly end game in my experience.

You should also note that SE is considering forcing people off Odin.
Dunno why it's so popular though 0.o

Odin isn't *that* much popular than Bahamut. The drama over Odin's high population is end-game related. I have a shitty computer, a shitty intergrated Intel graphics card, and a shitty slow-ass connection, and I have never once had any type of lag or problem due to overcrowding on Odin, and I do Besieged. I don't do end-game yet though, which is probably why I haven't had any issues.
And yes, Odin is cut off from World Transfers now, so no point for anyone to suggest it. From what I've heard, they've even barred the people using the Return to Vanadiel Campaign from returning to Odin. If overcrowding is truly a problem in endgame, then this latest move from SE is too little, too late. Not to mention that other games support a way higher number of simultaneous players with no issues, so perhaps SE should look into fixing stuff on their end rather than threatening people who pay money every month to cast them off to some random server they don't want to be on. 5k players is not exactly anything to freak out over when you think about how huge the world of FFXI is, and that's really the highest number of players on we have at a time. Rest of the time, we're at about 3k. That's nothing. Why would we actually want to split that in half..?

The only problem is that Odin is so top heavy that only about 25% of the server is ever outside Whitegate doing anything. So that leaves you with 2-4k + people in one zone all the time.

I'm in Remora, and I think it's nice and not crowded.

Don't touch the things! Remora is a local server for local people, there's nothing for you here.
