This is the official beastmaster history written by Square Enix. It was sold in japanese books long ago. Enioy.
The italic comments are not in the book, but are personal comments.

A Beastmaster is able to communicate with the various flora and fauna of Vana'diel. They are experts of ecology and can bring monsters under their command.

Beast Gaiters
These gaiters are bound and wrapped in animal skin, strengthened with iron, and then given a lanolin varnish. The spikes on the heel are uses to control large animals while riding them.

Beast Gloves
Both gloves are made from animal skin and are covered in matching embroidery. Although the material of the gloves is thick, the fingers are still quite flexible.

Beast Helm
This leather helmet is covered with several layers of animal pelts, such as sheep and rams, and therefore has a strong animal-like scent, which helps to keep wild beasts at ease.

Beast Jackcoat
Like the Beast Helm, this light armor is crafted from the pelt of various beasts. The design appears to expose the abdomen, but in reality keeps the wearer very warm and can withstand extremely cold temperatures.

Beast Trousers
These trousers are covered in bulky animal hides and soaked in lanolin to eliminate a human scent. Trainers will often wear them when breaking in large animals for riding purposes.

Sprits of Wandering Beasts

During the Crystal War, there was a time when Chocobos and other beasts were gathered together to be used as weapons. To assuage the tormented spirits of these animals that were sacrificed, you must undertake a quest to travel to Fei'Yin and present an Aquaflora as an offering. However, this gesture may awaken the spirit of a Beastmaster whose heart burns with vengeance.

This man tamed the wild Opo-Opos for his performances, and cared for them deeply. However, the war took his beloved pets from him and someone must comfort his soul before he can ascend to heaven. Find the scattered ghosts of his departed beasts and use your power as a Beastmaster to calm them and allow them to rest.

Beastmasters must always remember to give thanks to those that have fought and died for them. The bonds forged between master and pet are never to be forgotten.

Brutus

Brutus is a renowned Beastmaster who runs the Chocobo stables in Upper Jeuno. He is not only an accomplished Chocobo handler, but also possesses considerable skill with an axe. Additionally, he spends time helping to track down lost Chocobos that were abandoned in the wilderness.

Recently, there have been many Beastmasters who simply use their pets as tools to be exploited. This lamentable conduct has even spread to the staff of the Chocobo stables, causes Brutus much grief. To counteract this, he teaches all adventurers to treat their Chocobos with loving care, and that through kindness they can raise a splendid steed. Only those who can create this special bond with a Chocobo are able to receive the coveted Chocobo License. Being able to ride a Chocobo raised by Brutus is considered a great honor.

Abilities

Familiar
Beastmasters can use this secret technique to impose their will onto a charmed monster, intensifying their strength and increasing the duration of their service.

Charm
Beastmasters use this ability to charm a monster and order it to fight enemies as their servant. Creatures that have their own will, such as beastmen, cannot be charmed in this manner and neither can arcane or undead monsters.

Call Beast
By using a jar of soup favored by certain beasts, one can call them forth as a pet for a period of time.

Tame
This ability relaxes the enmity harbored within an enemy, making them easier to charm. It has no effect on monsters that are unable to be charmed.

Weapons and Armor
War Pick

This pick has a small handle and is designed for use in battle. Originally, it was used to hook onto and pull down mounted knights, but in recent times it is considered foul play. War Picks are now mostly utilized in training exercises.

Kabrakan's Axe
This Orcish axe was bestowed with the name Kubrakan, after a legendary Gigas who could bring forth earthquakes. When an enemy is struck, the axe disrupts their motor skills giving them the sensation of being shaken by an earthquake.

Carapace Helm

A skilled Bonecrafter is needed to construct this helmet from high quality crab shells. When the bearer of this armor is in trouble, foam begins to spew forth, causing smoother fluid movement of the equipment as well as covering it in a protective coating.

Bison Jacket

This jacket is from a set of battle armor used by a fabled tribe of warriors from the Western continent. It is made from buffalo leather, yet still easy to move in. In addition, the jacket is painted with juice derived from flowers, so the wearer is constantly surrounded by a pleasant fragrance.

Nice post but I think there can be some more content added there.
Anyone have any info on how BST was when it was actually first introduced to the game?
I read somewhere that charm had a huge recast timer and there was no limit to what you could charm back then.
Malboro pets anyone? biggrin.gif

BST was introduced along with all the first advanced jobs. Back then, charm was on a 5 minute timer which was really sucky, but we could charm everything except undead and sentient creatures. That's right, everything. Wanted a Manticore pet? Charm it! Wanted a Malboro pet? Charm it! Wanted another greater mob as a pet? Charm it! Granted, if you failed you were basically screwed as you could fire off tame, then do nothing for 5 minutes.

Yes, but the most epic of all was being able to walk around South Gustaberg with Bubbly Bernie at your side!
