I'm a level 61PLD and I've had several fellow PLDs tell me different things. Some say I need to drop the shield and use an Earth Staff while others say to stick with a Shield. So, what should I focus on?
Staff vs Shield

Staves.
Cute. But not funny. There's enough bad PLD as is, the last thing we need is PLDs made to be shitty from faulty advice.
Shield onry.

Don't listen to this nonsense! everyone knows Staves deal more dmg and have more defense than shield and sword.

This.
Main focus should be sword/shield, I could see a few situations where staff could come in but do that in your spare time after everything else is maxed.

Thanks for such swift responses.
So, sword and shield pretty much, huh? That's good news.

Earth Staff is a PoS for a PLD. The only time I ever recall using it anymore was for Alexander BC

Earth Staff isn't bad for kiting something if you have no movement speed or the mob runs fast enough to keep up anyway.
Or if you're somehow super-tanking a crowd of rangers so you can't shield block their arrows (not that i can think of any situation that this can happen in).
So yeah, you'll usually be using sword/shield.

like asdra said only if you were kiting something that would be beating on you. Other than that tell the people that said staff is better to quit being gimp

Oh yeah, earth staff is the best too if you're super-tank kiting something, like say Fort who you just pop and run from without claiming. You don't need enmity at all since you're just running and not using any hate tools. Fort is easy to outrun though.
Earth staff really went out of style years ago when they changed the shield system. Anyone who still uses staff in any situation besides what I listed, needs to get out more.

Earth Staff for PLD really only has one use, which Rob mentioned when I said it had no uses in a topic on BG.
If you're terrorized, Shield can't block and nothing removes Terror, so EStaff would be helpful in that situation.
Beyond that, the uses are very few and far between.
I use mine in the Antlion ENM (Duo it PLD and SAM) for Pit Ambush, but I supertank and kite in Sword/Shield.
Using Earth Staff in an XP PT, which is what I assume you're being told to do (based on your level) is quite possibly the worst idea ever and the people who told you do that really need to read up on PLD. That hasn't been an acceptable way to XP in years.

Why are you kiting in sword/shield? Mobs need to be gathered conal in front of you.
Unless you have Aegis or some other -%m.dmg and more worried about Magical Damage, kiting in E.Staff is preferred. You need mobs in front of you to actually shield block, no less than 60 degrees.

I thought the idea of kiting is to not get hit, while holding hate.
-20% damage taken of nothing?
I kite in a Sword/Shield because it gives me +10 Enmity. I keep hate, they kill it faster, we all win. ^^
And of course shit is situational, if I need to I swap to Earth Staff (Can't think of a single thing that I kite where getting hit often is a problem), but if it's something that I can't kite properly I might as well straight tank it and get use of Shield Mastery.
And yes, I don't have an Aegis but I do of course have a full -Magic Damage/Magic Defense Bonus set that I swap to whenever anything is being casted on me.
