I know this is a very old topic so please dont flame. Is there finally a private server for FFXI? If not how far are they from setting one? I've searched google for the past hour and found nothing yet.
FFXI Private Server?

No, there are no private servers to FFXI, nor do I think anyone is working on some- I know some tech-savvy people can play privately on their own server locally or something, but that's about it.
I doubt SE, the company that handed a cease and desist to a free project that was making a 3D Chrono Trigger, would allow a private server of FFXI to exist while the game is running. Don't count on one being around, and if there is one, I doubt it will be around very long.

Yeah I've often read that SE wont allow a private server, but if SE wont allow it cause it would cause them to lose money, why do other companies allow private servers for their games?

Moving this to KI Underground.
Also, there is a group working on it. But, nothing concrete or ready for public use.
It's mostly to just test the internal game mechanics, and practically incomplete.

most companies that allow PS are non profit companies. Others, i guess don't know, or don't care.

Blizzard allow private WoW servers but then again blizzard seem a bit more lenient about stuff like that. SE probaly think that it would pull players away from the official game onto PS.

nah blizzard never did allowed private servers. they closed off most of the ones that were obvously easy to find.
The only ones that are still alive, are the ones that were made inbetween friends and some that are in a closed circle.

No company has ever been ok with private servers, there are just some you can't do anything about. for pretty much every game, there are tons of private servers that got shut down as soon as they became big enough to worry the original company. There are some, though, that companies can't touch for whatever reason. And how could anyone suggest that a company DOESN'T lose money when a private server becomes active and popular? Even the companies that decide it is better to just let it go still lose money, they just feel they are losing less than they would through strenuous legal action.

Every time I see this topic I see "Pirate" server instead of "Private." And then I think "Who'd wanna play on a server filled with nothing but Corsairs...?"

that was pretty much the explation that would fit blizzard's behavor about private servers. Personally made a private server
from World of warcraft. Everything is in there cept for the npc scritping, event scripting and one other that has escaped my
mind atm. I havent gotten a chance to mess around with the FFXI one, more than enough it is a pain to keep track of what dats
have been changed or moved around without notice.

I remember a major project being worked on at one point several years ago. But if memory serves correctly, they ran into some sort of major issue. Something about some essential data that SE kept server side that they didn't have access to, that was client side on other mmo's like WoW. Essentially making a private server kaput for this game.

thats the probbaly the best way to keep private servers from even spawning. As for the ffxi offline project, yeah it couldnt have gone too
far to where it could be. Hence why its only good for "gear check, and what would be best if this stat was used for this ws. Or to find
the New hidden effects of Food + gear etc etc etc."
There is a small chance that someone could go through out ALL OF FFXI content and try to have a ffxi copy cat scripting of somethings
that is kept on the server side. but I dont see it being a sucess. <ms?>
As for world of warcraft once again i'll just say that npc and event scripts were mostly left on the server side. My own guess is mostly
room for where your charactor is, what items it has, how much gold it has and lastly to prevent Easy hacking, the data in the client side
has to match what the server has stored. <even ffxi has that>

Well to me it would have sort of ruined the experience.
I remember they were going to do stuff like 100% drops from nm's, etc. Which I guess would be sorta fun just to try stuff like Kraken that most people will never get. But some of the point of that stuff being special is its rarity and its difficulty to obtain, and that's why we get a little pride standing in town showing it off. So that's great if you can get all the great gear in a private server, but if everyone has it, it's no longer special, and that's part of the grandeur of the game.

you just explained why ffxi is so good with some of its stuff. But this is an offline version of it, yeah i can ruin the experince if you did something like this in the live version.
But I do see your point in all this. having done this with the world of warcraft

First page thread. Answers most of the OP's questions.
I stress again without the original server code (which pXI is not and will not be using) - any thoughts you might have about "testing" would essentially be useless.

This will be next release =D'
There are black magic kinks right now though

but as you can see, exp can be earned, you can skill up 99% of white magic works. Weapon skills are a go. The game is pretty much ready to rock. I keep up on it a lot.

Most of the actual mechanics of the game are stored server side, so they're pretty much stuck building from the ground-up, as for actual private servers, I believe in the pXI instructions there is a way to forward somebody onto the same private server as you, but they have to set it up on their side to go into your specified address rather then their own. Even then, the limitations of 'private server' are apparent, the project is not allowed to bypass POL Viewer, because of that it would never result in free play. Which keeps us in check paying for the game, they're losing nothing by allowing an offline mode or private mode so to speak, if the mobs and stats go up properly in pXI and I can get a 3-6 player group on one server, I would absolutely love to do certain fights normally not capable to test.

bypass as in, i don't have to log into pol to log into ffxi, cause it really is annoying to hit log in 4 times to just get into the game.
