Well it has been modded since I used it but it looks just like POL but when you make a handle it skips over the payment process and bypasses the server thus making you an account only on that server. Kinda like the way RO works.
FFXI Private Server?

The ability to use Private FFXI servers has been available for about 3-4 years... There is no "lawsuits" any company can bring against any single person for using these servers, unless someone would say make a server, give out the info, and charge people a fee to use it, be it monthly or just a 1penny activation fee. World of Warcraft has had the same deal for about the same ammount of time, and they both work pretty much exactly the same. you need to download a client or get some sort of web host to host the server off of, there are some programs that let you do it with ease, you'd then make an exact duplicate of the actual game on your computer and put it in a seperate folder, but since alot of the detailed gameplay, notoriuos monster spawns, npc events, stats, leveling, etc. are all server side with SE, you'd have to find somone with these files, or a programmer who has dup'd or immitated the files missing to have 100% functionality. These ALREADY EXIST and many people use them, you do not actually get to play WITH other people unless you get the server info and are able to convince the owner to add you as a member, which you would have to add as a .cfg or .txt file in the actual program file. for example i have c:/program files/square enix/ all the se files AND c:/program files/PrivateXI/pxi/servers.txt with admin:password as MY private servers username/password, which is pretty much useless to me or anyone else except for letting me login a GM character and play BY MYSELF which is pretty boring. I Don't know how to go about making it public and having other people connect to it to let them play but i know it's possible, and it HAS been for over 3 years, that's when i first learned how to do it. Info about it is pretty widespread, just google" ffxi private server" and you'll come up with 100's of pages of ppl saying how to do it or saying "come to my server" etc. etc.
SE Does NOT have the ability to "ban" you from these or bring any lawsuit against you, because all you're doing is copying the files they sold you and using them to play on a LAN pretty much.. #1 the only way they'd find out is by you calling them, giving them your info, name, address, etc. and telling them you're playing their game on a private server, or by you posting your private server all over the internet telling people to connect to it and play with you. #2 if they DID find out you were hosting a private server, it has nothing to do with Playonline, you use an entirely different program/host to make the game public, i.e. a web host, Hamachi, or some sort of dedicated/web related program/host. they can't control that and even if they could get the web host to shut you down you could just open another one, or be smart and download a client like hamachi to host it off your pc in which case there is NO way to stop it. #3 if all that failed, there is no law against decompiling programs or ripping stuff apart on your own computer, be it pirated or purchased, in fact it has been common practice in many college's to give examples to students and show how programs work, however i'll say it again, if you did have a private server and were charging ppl to play it, it's be the same as buying a movie and making copies of it to sell. but if you're not selling it and you're just playing on your own dedicated private server it's pretty much like buying a dvd, copying it to your pc and watching it on your pc. as far as having other people play on your server for FREE it'd be the same as buying a dvd, copying it to your computer, and inviting a bunch of friends over to watch it on your pc.
I Myself haven't payed for ffxi or played my character for about 2 1/2 years, tho i will be playing the new ffiv online and getting rid of my crapp WoW account. IN ALL FAIRNESS TO FF, i think ffxi is far better than wow, except 2 things, camera angles on pc for ffxi SUCK, and the fighting is like "attack (greatsword equipped) 10-15seconds later Attack (miss) 10-15seconds later Attack (miss)" extremely too slow now that i've played wow, hopefully ffiv will learn from this mistake and make fighting aspect of the gameplay more exciting. i will then emerge from my 1-2 days of playing final fantasy on a private server (by myself *sob*) to laugh at it and shut it off and not turn it back on for another 5-8months, and probably play it as dedicatedly as i now play WoW, or have played ffxi about 6 years ago.

Hey,
many private servers do exist and are functional! Most missions, gameplay, spells, abilities, items and quests are working. I'm not sure if we are allowed to talk about this but just search around for onetimexi or dark star server.
