So I've been looking at the guide for this on FFXIencyclopedia, and I'm a little bit stuck. My Chocobo recently became an adult, and I received the quest from Zopago to go and get my chocobo whistle. I traveled to San d'Oria, spoke with Hantelion, and he told me that I needed to find something that my chocobo had buried. The guide then instructs you to go on walks and says that your chocobo will "become preoccupied in its current activities."

It's been days since I've gotten that quest and the opportunity to even search for an item has not yet presented itself once. I definitely completed the mini-quest when the chocobo was still just a chick where I had to carry the handkerchief around on me for an hour and then give it back. I have taken my chocobo on a variety of different lengths of walks and I still haven't been given the chance to find the item... so what's the deal? Is it random when you get a chance to search for an item? for what length of walk do I need to go on?

I feed my chocobo every day, and I have the highest level of affection "chocobo regards you as parent."

I think when I did this I used to just take my chocobo on long walks (the longest one available). If you're san d'orian I think it's around jugner forest (it's been a while! lol)

That is odd.

When I raised chocobos I was based in Sandy, so I don't know the full way you're supposed to get the quest from Hantileon and then go back to your own choco trainer... since Hantileon is the trainer for Sandy. What I can tell you is that the length of the walk doesn't matter. Providing your quest is fully accepted the chocobo SHOULD wander off on walks and yes, some dialog will pop up about how it's intrigued by something, and you have an opportunity to search for the handkerchief. At that point it's random, sometimes the choco will catch you searching. You need to do it without it noticing to actually find the thing.

All I can figure is either it's glitched (unlikely, with all the updates/fixes since it originally came out, and it was fine then) or the quest isn't fully started.

Maybe your chocobo is still carrying something? You know, when they dig something up and then you can get it from them via the "Watch over" command. I don't know if that'd make any difference as that system wasn't implemented when I originally earned my whistle. It's worth a shot though.

Well thankfully the issue is resolved.

I thought it would be a worth a shot to just go and try talking to Hantileon again. For some reason, I got the scene AGAIN when he talks about having to find something that your chocobo has hidden, and to bring it back to him. Apparently the game must have glitched and not registered me as having started this quest. After talking to him, I talked with him again, didn't get the cutscene, zoned and returned, and didn't get the cutscene (just to be sure), then went back to Basty.

Waited a day, checked on my chocobo, took her for some walks, first time she was 'Really happy,' didn't search for handkerchief, second time she was totally occupied in other things, searched, found the handkerchief, and took it back to Hantileon for my whistle. =)
