Due to SE either not being able to or simply not altering the fact that monsters come unclaimed during pet swaps combined with my own personal frustration at having NM's stolen (generally at very low percentages), I would certainly like to hear how some far more experienced soloists have adapted to this. I'll list the things I do and the little tricks I've learned along the way to save time.
1. Not be solo (obvious, someone would've said this I'm sure)
2. Swap close to your next pet
3. Feral Howl/Dia/any other JA/Magic that's quick during a swap
4. Kiting via Heel and swapping at an unexpected time (pet at half HP, for example)
5. Being engaged (when possible/feasible)
I'm not sure if there are other things that one can do to keep claim on an NM, but if anyone could offer any advice, I'd greatly appreciate it! It's becoming quite frustrating to have Sky shells taking Despot, RMT taking Amemet (in all their gimpness and somehow managing to not wipe), or just jerks in general stealing Xolotl because they happened to walk by after a Rostrum Pumps run. Thanks in advance!

seems like you pretty much got it figured out ... so yeah, we're basicly screwed if we want to solo anything that takes more than 1 pet, i even had people steal my exp mob i was in mid battle with.

I was afraid that would be the response
I just wish people would have the decency to let you win or lose fairly I guess, though I'm not naive enough to think that's how it's going to turn out at any time. Again, thanks for the response and to any future responses!

You can also use jug pets as much as possible, so you don't lose claim on the NM and at least this way you know you'll have a pet for a few seconds anyways.
Having a duo partner is the best bet though, as long as one of you has a pet on the NM, you won't lose claim.
Also, if the NM you're trying to solo is heavily camped, try to go on an off time, to get it, so you won't have as many randoms walking by trying to steal.

Solo Lamiae, nobody won't steal them from you unless they're Bst themselves

The problem is that it's impossible for one person to hold claims on two mobs at the same time. Since Charm is a method of putting a claim on a monster, you're going to lose claim on your primary target any time you use it. If that wasn't bad enough, I've also had claim drop during a Call Beast pet swap WHILE CONTINUING TO ATTACK THE TARGET. So apparently this JA is tied to the claim system for some absurd reason.
To put it bluntly, BST's are screwed in this department.
What really pisses me off though is watching other jobs hold claims indefinitely while putting in no effort towards fighting. Jobs like Bard or Black Mage are pretty much free to do whatever they want without losing claim, while we can't even keep claim while keeping on the offensive.

I've never had this problem, and I would assume that would be a pretty severe breach of BST etiquette, yeah? That is to say, I'd never pull that on a fellow BST at the very least. I have found it amusing when others try to steal something dangerous and get taught a lesson though

It is strange the way we have claim setup on the system - but duo is the best way at this point to hold claims.

I was trying to solo One-eyed Gwajboj one time. This is one of Pally's AF NM's, and it doesn't drop anything except for the rare/ex quest item. Some SMN saw the NM and decided he wanted to kill it, as far as I could tell just because it had a funny name. When he realized I wasn't going to just let him take my NM away, he called in a second SMN to try to steal it away from me! It's really ridiculous to keep people from KS'ing you sometimes.

wow that fucking stupid.
I hate people stealing my NM's, cant get it back generally, so i tend to shout abuse.
Dia usualy works tho, since hate lvls would work in my favour, re-claim with provoke if i can call beast soon after ~
