There was only one reason I stopped playing Summoner when I hit level 31 instead of taking it to 75 was this:

It was nothing more than a pseudo-White Mage for 31 levels.

If it wasn't like that up to level 70 and beyond, I would have taken it higher.  Healing Magic skill is lower on SMN than it is on RDM, why make it a primary healer in the majority of EXP parties?  Because of the large MP pool?  It felt less like a SMN and more like a fake healer in Summoner garb.  Yes, I did take SMN up to 31 before the small updates came later on.  However, the point of a Summoner is to summon avatars, deal unwieldy damage, and be a force to be reckon with.  It isn't a White Mage job, and it isn't a Beastmaster or Dragoon.

I will reconsider taking up Summoner again in XIV, if there is indeed a SMN job for it, if SE actually makes it like a Summoner job that is indicative and similar to all other Summoner jobs for other Final Fantasy series.  Heck, even come up with something that's even more creative like they did for FFXIII.

remember some FF WHM and SMN was the same person, I think IX showed that and pretty sure X did as well.

XI though did it in a bad way for the simple fact it was a 1/2 assed whm. if it was something like IX i bet it would of been more interesting

all FF ( i think) expect X and XII did not have them stay out, the others would minc a summon and release like you do in XI.

VIII had an intersting approch to it as well, it was not a instent summon nor was it something you where able to keep out, like a hybird of the 2 systems.

while being summoned it would have its own HP and take hits for you with its hp till the timer was up, if it did not die it would use dimand dust or w/e.

hmm...

I'm a career summoner, and I'd definitely take on SMN again in FFXIV...
When I started XI, i never really had any goals in playing, but gradually that progressed into playing SMN and being good at the job and to be one of the best SMNs in the game - which is why i'm working on the mythic as well.

I'm not sure if I've achieved my goal at all.

so, in FFXIV, i will continue on this goal.. to push the boundaries of SMN play. It wouldn't matter if the job sucked or not, cos I love the job for what it is, not even what it can do, or how well it can do it. So I'd welcome other like-minded SMN to join me. Maybe my dreams of the Summoner Sanctum will become reality there.

Am I going to quit XI? Nope. I'd play less for sure.. but if there's new content, I'll still keep coming back to it (especially story).. new long term equipment goals and such, however, won't be undertaken...

I'm going to stay summoner most definately, but i DEMAND some changes.

First: Active Avatar Additions, there are MANY avatars from the FF universe to use, and what's stopping them from adding more?

Second: Core class changes. One of two options; Allow several summons to be out at once, with a toggle screen to control them, i.e. command a denizen army. Make avatars as powerful as players, and cost no MP. Summoner should be able to use abilities like every other class not once a minute, or 30 seconds.

Or a third option which I personally prefer... BECOME Your summoned avatar. It could be tied in with lore and done extremely well. Should keep the system of having to unlock avatars, but you have essences of them you take to be able to summon a lesser version of their power.

Way to make it interactive: Put a 2 minute timer on it,
but able to Extend the timer by actively participating in battle ( chaining abilties, etc.)

Thoughts? Suggestions? Sorry, I've been up all night and felt i needed to write it ( no matter how haphazardly!) before i forgot my line of thought.

Summoners have traditionally had limited, but powerful use...

You'd summon a god-like being, the god-like being does something amazing, then the god-like being goes away, often at the cost of heaps of mp (though not necessarily).

I think the perpetuation system of FFXI was meant to limit the powers of a summoner, but in the end it was a failed experiment. Not only were the costs of using summoned pets too high, but they didn't do anything particularly amazing at low levels. To make matters worse, not only weren't their feats amazing, but they were mostly sub-par, mp inefficient, and tied to a single, prolonged recast timer.

The only things summoner had going for it was a huge mp pool and the fact that curing from a sub-job still worked at full force. If /whm didn't work, there'd be no use for a summoner in any xp party.

So, whatever they try this time around... we definitely need to address how to make the core summoner job useful. I don't care what role they place summoners in (damage, tank, healer, support, whatever), it just has to work tongue.gif

wow... i forgot i made this thread >.>

its a sweet thread! Talking about XIV and all...

I have a question for people... (if you choose to answer it biggrin.gif)

Has anyone else just lost all ohhhh......... ambition/will ... to play ffxi? My breaks from ffxi get longer and more frequent.. but since the release of information on ffxiv I really have started to just get disgusted with logging on.

I think even new content will only excite me for a week. ;_;

Lol...

I actually gained ambition to play. I've been offline for quite some time now, but now that I know FFXIV is coming out, I feel as though I must go and finish WotG and ToAU. I think I have like...3 missions left in ToAU and I know I've got a shitton in WotG.

well i can see that if you have some unfinished things you want to finish... but if you know your quitting when it comes out then I could care less.... personally.

Overall though I have been trying to find a good reason to quit, and this has quit shitty ffxi all over it.

(ok... D3 is coming out as well, bioshock 2, halo ODST, D2 ladder reset is happening soon, ffxiv beta sometime soon hopefully..... so i guess i have a few reasons to quit)

I've been halfway out the door with FFXI for quite some time now (for several months, at least). I might log once a month these days on a lazy weekend or something. My shells have all folded, and most of my friends have left the game or are completely engaged with new friends. I just don't have the time or energy to spend on joining a whole new community which will be out-the-door themselves in a matter of months, and I can't really get ahead in the game without that support.

I'll probably quit until 14 comes out.

Thats pretty much how i feel. I still have my shell, and a few people that play though. I just dont find the game fun anymore. New avatars would spice it up for a little while, but that would soon die.

I just cant wait for...

ODST , Bioshock 2, ffxiv, diablo 3, and the diablo 2 ladder reset ! << such a old school game but still fun biggrin.gif

when I first heard about FFXI my response was basically "OMG SMN!" before I knew anything else about the game
then I read up about the prime avatars and about mage being a difficult class to start with (spells were expensive back then) so I looked at other jobs and found DRG
The same goes for FFXIV no smn no drg no thanks (Lancer doesnt count unless we get pet dragons)
So atm Im looking forward to Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2
which on the plus side means no more monthly fee's

It looks super appealing to me actually. Already looking like they've fixed a lot of what was wrong with FFXI. Specifically, there were too many jobs in FFXI and they were far too specialized that often they didn't even HAVE a specialization. Jobs because far too situational and some became completely useless. Looks like FFXI jobs were merged in FFXIV to make more well-rounded classes. It sounds like crafting will be far more useful and beneficial to have leveled too.

The character customization and the in-game scenery are both incredibly appealing as well.

The way the battle system works (where enemies are in a party and melee jobs have many AoE attacks, and position in battle is very significant to performance for both players AND monsters) makes me think FFXIV will take quite a bit of skill to play. Unlike FFXI where you auto-engage and stand there until you get 100% TP, fire off WS, rinse and repeat (for most melee classes.)

I really like that aspects of THF, MNK, and NIN seem to have been merged to create the Pugilist class. Like the way Lancer seems to be a combination of DRG and THF.

Conjurer is like a mix of BLM, WHM, and SCH, while Thaumaturge looks like a hybrid of RDM and DRK.

The most interesting so far seems to be Gladiator though. It looks as though it will be able to change between DD and tanking modes on the fly. I thought I saw a third mode too, but didn't make out what it was supposed to be. Maybe a balance between the two? I think a tank that can put out significant damage while tanking would make it much easier to hold hate, or if there are more than one tank, one of them can go into full-out DD mode to make it much more beneficial to the group rather than a fifth wheel. Which was one of the biggest problems for PLD in FFXI imo.

That's one of the things I like most about FFXI. Is having skilled players go into fights or situations in this game with a group of those "useless" jobs and still getting the job done. That's what makes this game fun for me. SMN burning sky gods. Taking an exp party to the bottom floor of Garliage Citadel with a DRG for a tank, and 2 smn's spamming earthen ward and Aerial armor getting 20k/hr at that lvl. Getting creative. Instead of the usual attitude most players have in this game: /shout "Nyzul Isle do you need it job anything". /tell "SMN do you need it?" /reply "SMN's can't do Nyzul Isle." /tell "but you said job anything." /reply "I meant any job that can do nyzul isle."
